Show Provo: The Team To Beat flra 3A Tournoy y By DAVE WIGHAM Unlike their bigger brothers the state 3A basketball tournament tour-nament seems to be a fight for second place. Almost everyone has conceded the title to the Provo team. BASKETBALL purists will tell you that the best tournament tour-nament is one in which any of the teams can win it all. Much like the state 4A in high school and the NCAA in college. But every once in a while a team comes along that dominates the scene. Usually that school is a larger school and in the 4A ranks. This year though the Provo Bulldogs, because of a new school in the town called Timpview, went down a class and are competing compet-ing in the 3A ranks. Maybe competing isn't the right word, maybe dominating would be a better way to describe them. LEADING the charge of the Bulldogs is one of the best big men, if not the best, in the state in a player named Devin Durrant. No his name isn't mispelled, it's not Kevin, the name is Devin. This player is listed anywhere from 6" 4" to er in the papers. They say he can play either guard, forward for-ward or center. He is also on the list of every college recruiter in the nation. Barring any unforeseen lac-cident lac-cident to Durrant the Provo club will be heavy favorites to win their first 3A title. Giving them the most problem in league play, they gave them a game for a little while, is the American Fork Cavemen, a club that has been a power in 3A for many years. They have lost twice to the Provo club and are hoping for a third shot at them. MURRAY High has gone through their league without much trouble. They have a guard named Craig Hammer that can hit from 35 feet with amazing accuracy. The Spartans Spar-tans have some good size up front with people like Jay Smaple, 6'5" and Hammer who stands about 6" 3". Maybe the true Murray team hasn't been tested yet and they might be able to pull off the big upset. Remember I was the one that favored General Custer in his last game. From this area it looks like both the Davis and Woods Cross teams will be making the trek up to Weber State for the tournament. The Region Four champion could very well be one of five teams, the league Is that close. Logan doesn't have a lot of height but they have good shooters. BOX ELDER has good height but lack quickness. Ogden doesn't have exceptional excep-tional height, but they can jump, but have been inconsistent. inconsis-tent. Davis makes up for any lack of anything but pure desire. Woods Cross is simply overjoyed at the thought of going to the tournament. Some of the games that .stl. One ? ' I shooters from ,illh( M man. 1 '"bk;,,; ss THERE'Ub(,u.
