Her song of "May. -Susan Coolidge. May, which probably derives its name from Maria, the mother of Mercury, is the last full spring month. It's a particularly pleasant month in the United States and most countries. TO US in the United States Mav also means Kentucky Derby Month (May 1), Memorial Day in most of the states, the end of school, May Day, Mother's Day (May 9) and Armed Forces Day (May 15). In addition to these days, there are several most interesting anniversaries in May. Do you rememer the most important of them? One concerns May 7. It was on May 7, 1915, off the Old Head of Kindsdale, on the coast of Ireland, that the Lusitania was sunk by a German U-boat, U-boat, causing the loss of 1,150 lives. THIS WAS one of the tragedies which finally brought the United States into world war ! against Germany. Harry S. Truman, 33rd President, was bom on May 8 in 1884. On May 10 the first trans-continental railroad met at Promontory Point, Utah, in 1869. THE FIRST permanent English settlement began at Jamestown, Va., on May 13, 1607, when 105 colonists settled in that small port city. And, on May 20, 1927, Charles Augustus Lindbergh took off from Roosevelt Field, N.Y., and made his non-stop flight to Paris-an heroic achievement which thrilled the world. |
