Show By DAVE WIGHAM Last week at a budget hearing Bountiful council members requested of the staff figures on hiring new police and fire officers for the city. CITY MANAGER Grant Peterson informed the council coun-cil at their last meeting that it would cost the city $13,640 for each new additional fireman. For a new police officer it would cost $24, 000. Included in the firemans package would be the salary, uniform allowance, monthly training school, and estimated estimat-ed overtime. The salary covers retirement and insurance in-surance also. THE POLICE officer is much higher not in salary but in equipment. The $24,000 covers salary, uniform allowance, used patrol car, maintainance allowance on the auto, gas, teleprinter, police radio, first gun, shotgun, shot-gun, helmet, badge, uintral siren, siren speaker, police light ban and miscellaneous emergency equipment supplies. POLICE CHIEF Anderson indicated to the council that he could cut down somewhat on the figures but that it would still be around $20 thousand for each new officer. The council then discussed several alternative plans to raise the money in order to hire the new personel. A total of 7 suggestions were made to the council, they were; a one mill increase in property taxes, power department profits, a 5 percent increased in Phone Co. franchise lax. ESTABLISH A 5 percent franchise tax on Mountain Fuel, to use more sales tax in geneial fund and cut capital projects, trim budget and other employees or services, or to re-allocate the revenue sharing money. Council members seemed very reluctant about the mill increase, but they decided to liave the city staff look into all possible solutions and methods and to report back to them with facts and figures. ALL WERE in agreement that these two departments are undermaned and need additional officers. The city is also looking for two people, over 16 years of age. to water the city parks at night during the summer.
