Show Interaction Heeded Willi Legislators FARMINGTON - Davis County mayors need to have more interaction with elected officials, Clearfield's mayor has told the County Council of Gove-- nts. MAYOR DONAL W. Townley, verbally and in letter let-ter form addressed the mayors in their regular monthly meeting as a council and said, "For the COG to be influential in the legislative process, information beyond the title of proposed bills (presently provided by the League of Cities and Towns) needs to be available at an earlier time, particularly if understanding is to be achieved." "Unless an understanding is gained, how are COG members to know whether a bill should be supported or not or even which ones contain con-tain provisions of interest if the full bill context is unknown?" un-known?" he said in a letter addressing the topic. PRESENT review policies by the mayors are not "totally effective," the letter said. "Since no requirement exists for COG inputs into the legislative process, any input must be made individually. It may not, therefore, represent a majority opinion from an area and thus may cause some concern or confusion in the mind of the legislative sponsor." Tje mayor recommended COG start action to formally join forces with elected county legislators on a regular basis. COG members could form committees to identify and formalize areas during the year where changes might be desired. OTHER ACTION might include convincing county legislators to provide information infor-mation on bills being formulated for-mulated outside the county and give data before the legislature meets. The letter also recommended recommend-ed formation of a committee to set guidelines for project review. All projects not meeting criteria would be rejected until necessary modifications were made tb |
