By DAVE WIGHAM BOUNTIFUL - The secret in high school basketball in Region One seems to be to check the week before to see what each team did. Take the Braves and Lancers last week, Bountiful was coming off an embarrassing loss to View-mont View-mont while the Lancers had just knocked off previously unbeaten Clearfield. EASY TO predict right, a Cakewalk for the Layton team. Well the Braves won the game and climbed back into the picture pic-ture for a state berth. Coach Mike Hall had indicated in-dicated that he was looking for the right combination in his players, the ones who would play together. He found them last week in the Layton win. EVERYONE WHO played for the Braves played well. Blaine Benard turned in one of the best performances by anyone in a Bountiful uniform as he hit on 10 of 10 field goal attempts and 4-4 from the foul line. Blaine didn't miss a shot all night and his field goal attempts at-tempts all came from fifteen feet out or more. Also in the double figure scoring category for the Braves were Lynn Muir, Jim Perkins and Frank Sessions. ALL SEASON Coach Hall has been saying that his club could beat anyone if they played together. They accomplished ac-complished that fete last week and as it turned out the coach spoke the truth. Bountiful looked more organized, or-ganized, especially on offense, in this game than in the past. They showed patience and worked for the open shot and usually hit it. NEXT UP for the Braves, following a Tuesday night encounter en-counter with Roy, will be Sky View in their biggest game of the season. Both the Bobcats and the Braves are fighting it out for a state berth and with the victories vic-tories coming slow, a win against each other is a must at this stage of the season. UP TO the Tuesday game both teams have two wins and the winner of this crucial contest con-test will have at least three and would be in the driver's seat. In the opening game between these two clubs the Braves didn't play well at all and lost a five pointer to the Bobcats on the Sky View floor. ''At half I looked at the stats and we had fifteen turnovers and were ahead by one, " noted Coach Hall. "WE KNOW how big a win is in this contest. The Layton win gave the kids the confidence con-fidence they can play with anyone in this league so I believe we'll be tough on everyone in the second round." . To stop the Bobcats Coach Hall will have to come up with a way to stop guard Rob Stevens who is averaging 18 points a game. In the first en counter with the Braves this 6'1" guard scored a game high 31 points. BOUNTIFUL is a balanced scoring team with Benard, Muir Perkins and Sessions all capable of scoring in the dou-ble dou-ble figures as they did a week ago. Clark Mabey and Scott Stewart both played aggressively aggres-sively up at Layton especially on defense and she,,,,, factor m battling thcT Nelson plawri blofmeyearoS bench in a reserve rol.
