Show E2ot Wildcats To Battle South By DAVE WIGHAM WOODS CROSS - If the old saying the rich get richer and the poor get poorer holds true this week, then the South High basketball team is in deep trouble. THIS FRIDAY the Cubs have the task of facing the hotest club in the 3A ranks at this time in the Woods Cross team. The Cats have just earned the tag of being named as the number one 3A club in the state of Utah. Woods Cross and South are about as opposite as day and night. The Cats have everything going for them with a perfect 6-0 league record. South is 0-6 and still looking for that first win in Region Four action. WOODS CROSS has established es-tablished stars in the likes of Mark McCleery, Mark LeCheminant and Brent Hor-ton Hor-ton while the Cubs tare still looking for someone who can score regularly. South has lost a lot of school support from the students, basketball just doesn't seem to be high on the list. The Wildcats have one of the best studentbodies in the area, they support this team both at home and on the road. SOUTH HAD a long tradition tradi-tion of winning basketball games and making the annual appearance to the state tournament, tour-nament, yet in the recent years the Cubs have been absent ab-sent from the tournament. Woods Cross is establishing that same tradition the Cubs enjoyed in their early years. Last year the Wildcats won the consolation title and are looking for bigger and better things this year. BASICALLY then this game pits the old guy on the block against the new young star. Although the South team has yet to win in the league no one has found them to an easy win. Last week for example the Cubs lost a three pointer to the Box Elder club which is 3-3 in league play. The Cubs are no pushover for anyone. THE BEST player on the floor for the Cubs will be Anthony Nelson, a heady senior who has started every game since enrolling at the Salt Lake school. Nelson is currently averaging 13 points a game. Woods Cross has their big man in the middleMark McCleery who is scoring around 20 points a game. . 'tylark is definitely the main , concern for the smaller Cubs, at 6'5" Mark towers over everyone the South team can put on the floor. EASY TO figure out, play a zone and sag inside on McCleery. Go ahead and Mark LeCheminant (14 points per game), Jeff Ostler, Brent Horton, Mark Earnshaw, Lynn Westergaard and Greg Tuttle will have a field day scoring. Woods Cross is a far cry from a one man show. Coach Wayne Baker and his staff have quickly transformed trans-formed the Wildcats into a powerhouse in basketball. His accomplishments have been tremendous for a second year team, seldom has a young coach achieved the goals he has attained. SHOULD be a long day for the Cubs as the Woods Cross bunch is simply too good for them. The South players have pride though and will battle, along with Nelson will be Hal Sorenson, Rick Thomas and Richard Stayner who'll keep this game respectable. Look for a Wildcat win but the Cubs won't hand it to them. |
