The Ute varsity team will battle the Tigers in Orem Saturday and will host Mountain View April 13. ; A mm erne on Firk eirew Two doubles, two walks and three runs enabled the Uintah Utes to knock the daylights out of American Fork pitcher, Brock Knight in the' third inning, but that wasn't enough as they dropped the first game of a doubleheader with American Fork, Saturday in Vernal by the score of 10-4. American Fork jumpd out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Martin Smith led off with a mighty shot to center field, but Ute outfielder, Dale Wood turned in an outstanding one-handed-leaning-backwards catch for out number one. Travis Hansen was walked by Ute pitcher, pit-cher, Mike Robbins and Troy Hansen flied out for out number two. Nate Oliver ripped a double between the center and right fielders to score Hansen and give American Fork a 1-0 lead. Knight was walked and two men were on the base paths. However, Robbins got out of a jam when he whiffed Dave Holland for the third out. Uintah's first two batters, Randy Nelson and Jerry Young were struck out by Knight, but Kurt Robb reached first base when he was hit by the pitcher. Robb died at first base when a shot by Jim Abegglen was captured by pitcher, Knight for the final out in the bottom of the first inning. The Cavemen clubbed Uintah pitcher, Robbins for four runs in the top of the second se-cond inning for a 5-0 advantage. Brian Greening gave the Uintah Utes a hint of the offensive show in the top of the second se-cond inning when he blasted a pitch over the right field fence for a home run and a 2-0 lead. . Uintah paid dearly for the costly error as Troy Hansen slugged a pitch over the center field fence for a two-run homer and a 5-0 lead. Once again the Uintah Utes' first two batters, Darin Nelson and Mike Robbins, struck out in the bottom of the second inning. in-ning. Wood gained a free pass to first base. He stole second base and when the throw to the bag got by the second baseman he tried to steal third, but was nailed for an out on a perfect throw from the centerfielder. The American Fork team increased their lead to six runs at 6-0 with one run in the top of the third inning. Holland singled up the middle and a sacrifice hit by Greening moved Holland to second base. The Utes were only three runs behind American Fork, but the Cavemen clobbered clob-bered the Utes for two runs each in the fourth and fifth innings to take a seven run lead of 10-3. Abegglen replaced Robbins on the pitching pit-ching mound for the Uintah Utes in the top of the fourth inning and he had great success with the first batter, Travis Hansen as he got the batter to ground out to first baseman, Gary Swim. However, he wasn't as fortunate with the next two batters as he walked Troy Hansen and Oliver. Hansen stole second base and reached third base on a wild pitch. A poor throw to third base on a pick off attempt at-tempt allowed Hansen to score. A sacrifice fly by Knight drove in Oliver with an 8-3 lead. Holland singled, but Greening flied out for the third out. The Uintah Utes went down one, two, three in the bottom of the fourth inning as Robbins, Wood and McNamara struck out. However, the strikeouts proved quite interesting as all three used different ways of whiffing. Robbins struck out, but the third strike was dropped by the cat-' cat-' cher. Robbins was forced out at first base. Wood attempted a bunt, missed and struck out. McNamara watched the third strike sail by. American Fork scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning for a 10 to 3 advantage. advan-tage. The Cavemen's Hackford clubbed a double when the ball dropped between three Uintah Utes in the outfield. Smith doubled to drive in Hackford with run number nine. Uintah's shortstop pocketed a fly ball by Travis Hansen in shallow center field for out number two, but Troy Hansen and Oliver were walked to load up the bases. Knight was walked and Smith scored to give the Cavemen a 10-3 advantage. Randy Ran-dy Nelson replaced Abegglen on the mound and the Utes got out of the inning inn-ing when a vicious shot by Holland was snared by Ute right fielder, McNamara. The fourth inning was a silent one for the Utes, but the fifth inning was a bang-bang bang-bang affair as they scored one run and came pretty close to scoring a second run. Swim grounded out at first base on a close play, but Randy Nelson and Young were walked. Nelson and Young stole second base. A wild pitch advanced advanc-ed Nelson to third base and a sacrifice hit by Robb scored Nelson to cut American Fork's lead to six runs at 10-4. However, the third out was gained a few seconds later when Young, who was also trying to score on the sacrifice hit by Robb, was tagged out at home plate. American Fork bats were silenced in the top of the sixth inning as they were retired one, two, three. Brad Richens and Darin Nelson struck out for the Utes in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Robbins Rob-bins and Capps were walked. However, the runners were stranded on the base paths when Chris Gamble grounded out. The Cavemen were retired in quick fashion in the top of the seventh, but the Utes put on a good show in the bottom of the seventh inning even though they scored zero runs. Swim was walked, but was tagged out trying to steal second base. Randy Nelson was walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. Young struck out and Robb was walked.
