Monti, 21, St. Louis, hears the accusation against him read by U. S. Commissioner Edward Fay (right) at New York: making propaganda broadcasts for the Germans from October 1944 to May 1945 under the name "Martin Wiethaupt." When he was an Air Force lieutenant at Karachi, India, Monti hitched rides to Italy, stole a plane and landed in the German-occupied part, for which he was court-martialed after the Germans surrendered, but was permitted to re-enlist as a private. A long investigation by the FBI resulted in the new treason charge punishable by death. |
