Show '.Editorial. . . Support of Burr Trail Paving Vital to South Utah's Future Hearings concerning the proposed paving of the Burr Trail in Garfield County are slated this week in Escalante as well as Blanding. If there was ever a time southern Utahns should be involved and participate par-ticipate in a hearing, this is one of the most important. Hearings will be held Thursday in the Escalante High School gym in Escalante and Friday at Edge of Cedars State Pxrk auditorium in Blanding. Each begins at 7 p.m. The hearings, which were set by the National Park Service will give southern Utah residents an opportunity to comment com-ment on the proposal which if approved, ap-proved, would add another major paved road to southern Utah. When completed, the paving would provide an all-season highway from Boulder southeasterly to Lake Powell, adding another major access to southern Utah's recreation areas. Not only would the area in Garfield, j Wayne, Kane and San Juan counties benefit, but all of southern Utah would see an increase in tourism because of this additional access route. There are, of course, those who oppose any progress in the way of "changing nature." These are generally people who live in the cities which they help to pollute but want to keep those of us who choose to live in rural areas from any kind of progress by locking up I wilderness areas for their once-in-a-while . playground. This opposition started months ago in this most recent round of efforts to pave the Burr Trail. By attending one of these hearings and having feelings voiced for the record, people of southern Utah will be putting their money where their mouths are, figuratively speaking, in showing support for something which will be a permanent benefit to the area. We hope that not only will the public in general attend one of these hearings, but that officials of municipalities in all of southern Utah will be present to have their feelings voiced and support this vital link in southern Utah's road system. It isn 't often that a major proposal such as the Burr Trail road is pushed to the extent that this one has been. It is imperative im-perative that the area support the effort to get this road paving completed. Attending At-tending a hearing and having your feelings placed on record is one way to help. |
