Show Meeting to Discuss Tourism -of -Region Interested persons will have the opportunity to review and discuss work that the Association has been doing since the first of the year, including the personal contacts with State and Federal land managers, tourism promotion groups and private entrepreneurs, a "key informant in-formant survey" conducted by the staff aimed at persons in the region directly involved with tourism, and a contract for tourism economic data with a private tourism consultant. con-sultant. Response to the planning effort has thus far been enthusiastic with the feeling that such an approach to tourism is long overdue and a benefit to the entire region. Promoting southwestern Utah for recreation and tourism will be the subject of a public meeting open house in Panguitch on Tuesday, May 28 set for 6:30 p.m. in the Commission Com-mission Room of the Garfield County Courthouse. The meeting is being sponsored by the Garfield County Travel Council in cooperation with the Five County Association of Governments. "In 1984, $131.1 million was spent by tourists in the Color Country travel region alone," says John Williams, executive director of the Five County AOG, "and with proper planning, we should be able to improve im-prove even further on the economic base of our communities." The Five County AOG is deeply involved as the lead agency in a regional comprehensive plan to assess the current status of the recreation and tourism industry in southern Utah. One of the most critical aspects, says Williams, is the need for input from those most directly involved with recreation and tourism. |
