Show 'Camp Stamp' Program Set By Forests A new "Camp Stamp" program devised by the U.S. Forest Service is now in use in the Powell District of the Dixie National Forest according to District Ranger Clair Baldwin. The stamps, which come in 50 cent to $3 denominations are designed to be used inplace of cash or checks at local Forest Service Campgrounds. The Camp Stamp program is expected to reduce accounting costs for the Forest Service and the savings is being passed on to campsite users, said Baldwin at a reduced rate of 15 percent of the face value of the stamps. Beginning May 22, the stamps were made available for purchase at local Forest Service offices In Panguitch, Escalante, Teasdale, or Cedar City. They are also available at Safeway and Maverick stores and Forest Service offices throughout the state, Baldwin said. Cash or checks are still accepted on-site at campgrounds but users must pay the full price, he noted. The Camp Stamp program, the brainchild of a Provo Forest Service employee, is being tried in Colorado and Utah after a similar trial program last year in the Wasatch National Forest. An evaluation will be made of the projected benefits of the program to the Forest Service and how well accepted the Camp Stamps are by the public. If the program proves to be a success, it is expected to be adopted nationwide next year. |
