Show CORN PILED UP Trouble Over Its Transportation While the People in India Are Starving New York May HNo arrangements have yet been made for forwarding the 15000 tons of corn stored In Brooklyn warehouses to the plaguestricken districts dis-tricts of India I is a mistake to suppose sup-pose that this is a matter which rests with the custom house authorities Six weeks ago congress authorized the secretary secre-tary of the navy to charter a steamship of American registry to convey the contributions con-tributions of food stuffs to India The contributions comprised chiefly wheat buckwheat barley and rye which were sold and with the proceeds corn was bought When congressional authority to hire a vessel was granted the contributions amounted to about 4000 tons Daniel W Hawthorne the deputy collector in charge of the marine division of the customhouse custom-house reported to the secretary of the nry that a vessel could be procured to carry the grain at 10 a ton The rapid accumulation of grain made i necessary to look for a larger vessel but one could not be found There is no American vessel available that will hold 15000 tons The only vessel that will hold so larre a cargo is the HamburgAmer ican line steamship pennsylvania The thing to be done apparently as the secretary retary of the navy is not empowered to engage more than one vessel Is to see if the British authorities will not provide a vessel t take the larger part of the corn while the American vessel takes the remainder = g |
