Show WASHINGTON MONUMENT I I Preparations For Its Unveiling Completed Com-pleted McKinley Will be Present Philadelphia May HAl the details for the ceremony of unveiling the Washington monument in Fairmount park t tomorrow are practically complete com-plete Notwithstanding almost contin week the exterior uous rain for the past I terior Qf many business houses and dwellings have been prettily deoiated I with flags and bunting and the city I has already assumed a gala holiday j appearance The Pennsylvania National Guardsmen I Guards-men began to arrive early this morn lag from different sections of the state and Continued to come in throughout the day iToja its magnitude the parade promises to present a grand military pageant i President McKinley VicePresident I Hobart and the members of the cabinet II cabi-net with the exception of Secretary I Sherman and Long arrived here late this afternoon Representative Bailey I I of Texas and Secretary Porter accompanied accom-panied them The president was escorted I es-corted to the Hotel Walton and the vicepresident to the Lafayette Both I immediately retired to their rooms for a short rest The president was afterwards I after-wards waited upon by a committee from the Manufacturers club Tonight a banquet was given at the Union league in honor of the president vicepresident and cabinet officers About 50 persons sat down The address ad-dress of welcome was made by Stuart Patterson president of the Union league after which he proposed three cneers for McKinley which were heartily given President McKinley made a short reply re-ply during which he said I thank you very much for this great honor and the warmth of thereception from the representatives of the Union League I realize and appreciate what has been said with so much eloquence by your president of the great man and great memories that have been honored by this organization 1 thank you geile men foryour extreme courtesy Nothing Noth-ing has been more gracious to me than this great welcome to Philadelphia and it w1 ever remain with me as a precious preci-ous memory Cheers Besides the president and vicepresi dent the memoers of the cabinet were Secretary Gage Secretary Alger Secretary Sec-retary Bliss PostmasterGeneral Gary Secretary of Agriculture Wilson At torneyGeneral McKenna tl Following the banquet there was a reception during dur-ing which several hundred members of the league and many invited guests met the president and his party This was brought to a close at 1030 oclock and at 1 oclock the president retired for the night |
