Show I Excitement in London New York May 14A special to the World from London says The apparently authentic statement that Turkey intends to demand the ceding of the Greek fleet as an essential essen-tial condition of peace is eagerly discussed dis-cussed here both by the press and politicians I is contended that if Turkey gets the Greek ships it will be equivalent to handing them over to Russia thus upsetting the balance of naval power in the Mediterranean sea Sir Charles Duke said to a World reporter porter who saw him in the house of commons I Turkey gets the Greek fleet it will be tantamount to taking its value in money from Greece thus I further embarrassing her but with no I corresponding naval advantage to Turkey for the sultan will allow the ships t go to Russia in three or four I years when they will be of no further use to any power I am intensely Hellenophile and I hate to even think of the suffering Greece will undergo by reason of the Turks exactions The moral effect on Europe of the subjugation of Greece I regard as ruinous especially damaging to British interests Greece is the only country in eastern Europe in complete sympathy I sym-pathy with out western ideas of civilization civili-zation and progress and the only one zto which will proges all likely to assist England i eastern complications arise She has failed disastrously in her gallantly inspired struggle and as I have said the moral effect of her failure fail-ure is certain to make itself felt injuriously in-juriously in future developments of the eastern question Sir Charles Dilke expressed these views with impressive earnestness The World representative next saw Mr James OKelly M P a close student of foreign politics who expressed ex-pressed precisely the same views He said I the powers allow Turkey to deprive Greece of her fleet i will be I a grevious almost an irreparable loss to Greece but the ships wont be worth a six pence in a year as they will be totally neglected by the sultans I government Several liberal members with whom the World representative I spoke declined to believe that the powers will permit Turkey to inflict such a gratuitous humiliation on Greece Some thought the Greek commanders com-manders would be justified in sinking their ships rather than surrendering them The feeling of the government ministers min-isters is that Greece can expect no mercy and should be profoundly thankful thank-ful for any terms the powers may succeed suc-ceed in obtaining for her from her conqueror This spirit is reflected in I the conservative press which now has nothing but derision for Greece and unqualified condemnation of her action I from first to last |
