Show rowWILL STAND BY THE WILSOIS BILL Probable Action of Democrats of I ths Senate GORMAN WANTS A SUBSTITUTE HIS IDEAS ARE COMBATTED BY S MANY SENATORS Wilson Bill They Say While Not Perfect is a Democratic Measure and Can Easily Be Brought Up to the Desired Standard Tariff Had Nothing to Do With the Late Campaign Which Was Fought on Living Issues 1I I 1 Washington May HThere is some difference of opinion among the Democratic I Demo-cratic members of the senate committee I commit-tee on finance as to the policy to be j pursued in regard t the tariff bill I Some of them notably Senator Gorman Gor-man are of the opinion that the Democrats Demo-crats should prepare a substitute bill and introduce it They suggest that this substitute should embody the Democratic Demo-cratic idea as to the tariff giving uniformly uni-formly lower rates than the Republican bill either as prepared in the house or I as amended by the senate committee I on finance There is however quite a pronounced opposition to this pro gramme on the part of many Democratic Demo-cratic senators including several members mem-bers of the committee on finance They take the position that the safest course for the party is to stand by the Wilson bill which while it is not perfect is still a Democratic measure The party they say has taken the position that I no tariff legislation is necessary The campaign was fought on other issues and ther hold that to raise the tariff question on their own motion would be inconsistent and unwise Those who hold to this idea are willing ing that amendments should be offered of-fered covering all the schedules and it seems probable that this course will be pursued I I |
