Show HOMES OF VICTIMS I TO BE PUCARDEO New Measure Taken to Curb Spread of Influenza Influ-enza in Utah. EIGHT DEATHS IN CITYj Disease Situation Throughout Through-out State Shows No Material Ma-terial Improvement. All houses in Salt Lake and T'tah In which influenza cases have developed must be placarded at once with signs bearing the word "Influenza'1 In large letters. This order was issued yesterday j by Dr. T. E. Beatty, state health, com-' mlssioner. All persons in the family I in which a case is discovered are instructed to don masks at once. Dr. Beatty said that in almost every case where one member of the family contracted con-tracted influenza the entire household soon became victims of the disease. "Xo one should go into a house in which a patient is suffering from influenza except ex-cept In case of necessity, and then only wearing a mask, and otherwise properly safeguarded." .said Dr. Beatty last night. "In case these rules are violated it will be necessary to quarantine the entire 1 household, which would undoubtedly work a hardship which should be unnecessary j if the public will observe the rules." Local Situation Unchanged. The situation in Salt Lake and Utah ap- . parently remains unchanged. While cer- tain towns of the state have apparently j checked the disease, at least for the time j being, other towns report their first cases. I A telegram received from Provo y ester- I day by Dr. Beatty was to the effect that ! forty new cases of influenza had appeared ! There in twenty-four hours. Six of these I cases developed at the Brigham Toung I university among the students' army training corps. Portage developed seventy cases over night- Previous to this repot t, which was received last night, no case had been discovered dis-covered in that town. Startling facts were revealed yesterday when nurses reported that in some cases members of families were deserting their own relatives through fear of contagion. "One nurse reported that a mother refused re-fused to care for her own daughter." said Mr, Shields. "In other instances patients ; do not get the proper care because mem-bers mem-bers of the family are too frightened to come near them." Safeguards Are Simple. "These reople should realize that" they are absolutely safe In handling these cases IT they will wear masks, properly wash and disinfect their hands and thoroughly , boll the dishes used by the patient. They j must realize that we can not secure ', enough help to even care for the cases In I which no member of the family is able to care for the patients. If such families want advice or masks or gowns they can be obtained from the Red Cross. A gradu- j ate city nurse win visit all cases and ; give instructions and see that everything ! needed in caring for the patient is sup- ; plied." There were two deaths from influenza 1 pneumonia at the Fort Douglas isolation j hospital yesterday. They included Pri- vate Pat .Desmond. B company. Seven- . tleth engineers, and George Payne, C j company. Seventieth engineers. There ! were only four new cases of influenza admitted to the isolation hospital during i 1 the day and sixpatients were discharged i as cured. Five Pneumonia Cases. There were five new cases of pneumonia j during the day. The number of new cases 1 of influenza has been decreasing dally j for four or five days past and the dally number of new cases of pneumonia has remained the same. The percentage of mortality among the pneumonia patients has been below the average for other cam os. The supply of Rosenau vaccine at the city board of health became exhausted yesterday at noon. By that time about 1 200 people had received t lie treatment, while doctors throughout the city had accinated several others. How soon another supply will reach the city or stale board of health Is uncertain, but requisitions have beerT sent to eastern laboratories. The vaccine being manufactured man-ufactured at the city laboratory is not yet ready for use. An interesting fact has been discovered discov-ered by doctors who have examined the records of the city board of health. According Ac-cording to the Hta'istics kept regarding the Influenza fatalities, it has been discovered dis-covered that the greater number of victims vic-tims In alt Lake City a re between the ages of IS and 40 jears. Only . about twelve of the 117 deaths which have occurred oc-curred In the city as a renvilt of the epl-demi- have been those of children under un-der 12 years of age, and about ten are : 'o of men and women over 30 years of age. "Physicians." said Dr. Beatty, "even If they are hard pressed, should take the lime 'Pn report all new cases- and this means not only new families In which the disease occurs, but every Individual -e." The inspector sent by the stale board of i.eait h to Delta reported that the nurse g&nt there from the fled Cross had met With a particularly distressing case, where fourteen persons In one household had been strl'-ken with the disease.
