OGDEN MAN IS GIVEN AKli HONOR Mack Garr Is Made Lieutenant-Colonel During Battle at St. Mihiel. Special to The Tribune. OGDEN, Oct. 29.-Fromotion on the battlefield is an honor that has come to an Ogden 'boy in France', according to advices received from Mack Garr. 29 years of age, who has been named a lieutenant-colonel lieutenant-colonel of the regular army and assigned to the staff of Major-General Liggett of the Second army corps. For the past year Garr was. a major of cavalry- During th battle in the St. Mihiel salient, Garr commanded a battalion which aided in the reduction of the entire St. Mihiel salient, which had been under the German forces for the past four years. Garr is the youngest lieutenant-colonel in the American Amer-ican army. Major Garr and his forces were engaged in one part of the offensive Which was under the observation of Secretary of War Newton D. Baker, General Pershing, General Heintzelman and Major-General1 Liggett. It was in the battle while serving serv-ing under General Heintzelman that Major Ma-jor Garr won the promotion. Colonel Garr is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Garr, 801 Washington avenue. ave-nue. He enlisted in the Fifteenth Infantry at Salt Lake in 1911. He served in China, the Philippines and Hawaii with the Fifteenth Fif-teenth and upon returning to the states he took an examination and was commissioned commis-sioned a second lieutenant and assigned to cavalry under General Heintzelman and was with the Pershing expedition into Mexico. He was promoted to captain. He went to France in the early part of this year as a major of cayalry with General Heintzclman's division. |
