Made Up of Interested Sportsmen Over County i- , Prospects of a site in the left-hand fork of Hobble Creek canyon, approximately 12 miles east of Springville, becom-4 becom-4 ing a winter 'recreational area for Utah county and the state, looked bright, following a meeting e sponsored by the Springville Jay- f cees, of sports enthusiasts, forest r officials, city and county officials, last Thursday evening, k Following a discussion of possi-5 possi-5 bilities of the area, presented by ' forest officials Don Partridge, Og- den; Merrill Nielson, Spanish Fork,' and other visiting authorities, authori-ties, a committee was appointed to l' further investigate snow coverage, methods ,of clearing the site, accessibility ac-cessibility and other phases of the 16 proposed site. The committee, l' composed of Don Humphrey, chair-man; chair-man; Mark Anderson, Provo city mayor; Glenn Sumsion, Springville mayor, and John I. Holley, Mapleton Maple-ton mayor, also mayors of Orem, Payson and Spanish Fork, was ap- ' pointed to head a group of mter-' mter-' ested sportsmen on a tour of the area Sunday to check snow meas-' meas-' urements and other facilities of I the area. k It was pointed out at the meet- l- ing that of several proposed sites x which may be developed into a recreational rec-reational center, the Hobble Creek Bartholomew canyon ski grounds is will receive first consideration by j, the forest service, if preliminary ,j investigations and interest in the u project warrants development of 12 the site. -i jj A letter from Sverre Engen, professional skiier who recently visited the area, was read in the i(j meeting, and he stated that the' proposed recreational area had possibilities beyond others he had visited over the state. The proposed ski site is easily m accessible, a roadway being already al-ready constructed to within about three miles of the slope, it was stated at the meeting. It was further fur-ther pointed out that only three miles of new road would be necessary neces-sary to reach the site. Mayor Anderson of Provo explained ex-plained to the group that inasmuch inas-much as the forest service had indicated in-dicated aid would be extended to such a proposed recreational project, proj-ect, Provo city would move to have areas developed in Provo canyon providing the Hobble Creek project proj-ect was considered unfavorable. The trip to the proposed ski site Sunday was the first of a number which will be made to check on various phases of the area. If the site measures up to expectations in regard to snow depth, accessibility and other details, the findings will be submitted to the forest service, who will study them with a view of making plans for a lodge and other winter recreational development. |
