Show GOVERNMENT COST ' SOARS SINCE 1896 Cost of state government during the 50 years of Utah's statehood skyrocketed from $247,621 in 1896 to $47,324,801 in the 1945-46 fiscal year, a check of auditor's reports shows. During the first year of statehood, state-hood, the biggest single items were $53,500 drawn by the U. of Utah, $40,000 by the legislature, $38,726 by the state mental hospital, $23,- 500 by the Utah Agricultural col- , lege and $18,657 by the state industrial in-dustrial school. These expenditures were Lilliputian Lilli-putian in comparison with those of 1896 when state institutions together to-gether were allocated $935,811 or only 2 percent of total funds expended. Big item in 1946 was public education for which was spent $11,550,160, or about 24 per cent of total expenditures. Other 1945-46 expenditures were Roads, $6,074,905 or 13 percent, welfare, $9,803,655 or 21 percent, public health $841,220 or 1.50 per cent; liquor purchases, $10,932,845 or 24 percent, fish and game, $737502 or 30 percent and all 001-' er expenditures, $6,448,699 or 14 percent. Included in these expenditures expen-ditures was $5,107,106 in federal grants for welfare, education, public pub-lic health, roads, and other items, about 10 percent of the total receipts. re-ceipts. Receipts for the 1945-46 fiscal year included $25,301,093 in taxes of all kinds about 48 percent of the total; $2,193,859 in licenses and fees, or 4 percent; $14,429,623 or 28 percent from sales and services, serv-ices, including $14,021,293 from sale of liquor; $1,399,602 in coun ty contributions for welfare match-. ing, $511,742 investment sales; $339,613 in refunds of expenditures; expendi-tures; $560,662 in interest income, $965,314 in teachers' retirement contributions, and $1,394,876 from other miscellaneous sources. Ratio of the latter six items to the total yearly receipts was about 10 per cent. Largest item in the 1945-46 column col-umn of receipts was sales tax income which totaled $8,363,726, compared with motor fuel revenue which totaled $6,617,073. State : income and corporation taxes to-i to-i taled $3,880,648 while property I taxes brought $2,318,497 into the state treasury. |
