Show Beautification Fable Points Moral For St. George Citizens By B. JARVIS Jr. Chairman Beautification Comm. Three persons met one day to discuss dis-cuss civic improvements in preparation prep-aration for a State Centennial. Their names were Faith, Pride and Perseverance, and though they were not actual members of the state committee, they were always present when plans for the extensive ex-tensive program were being discussed, dis-cussed, and sensed their responsibility responsi-bility in putting this program over effectively. "We must have an appealing slogan, a stimulating word," said Pride, and after discussions the word was selected and they set forth to arouse the hearts of men, women and children to cooperate in their great scheme. The magic word they whispered to each was impelling. Out on the highway they met (Continued on page three) Beautification (Continued from first page) Mr. Skeptic who inquired, "Where are you going, clever ones, and what do you hope to find?" The told him their mission and of the magic word which they carried and what they hoped to accomplish. He merely laughed in their faces and derisively wished them "good luck". But they were not to be discouraged. dis-couraged. Through every city, town, mill center and farming district dis-trict they traveled, and as they repeated the word, its message of importance increased in volume, echoing from hill to hill even after they had journeyed on to the next town. Unsightly trash and weeds were removed. Fences and barns were repainted. Homes were painted and improved. The state began to shine. Began In Farming Districts The program began in the farming farm-ing districts but soon the word of it reached the cities and people began to see who could make the most marked improvement. Trees, shrubs, flowers, playgrounds, and lawns replaced once desolate looking look-ing trash-filled yards. Old and young alike made this work a part of their daily leisure time activity, and soon songs of happiness happi-ness filled the air, brought forth spontaneously because of the work they were doing. Church groups caught the inspiriation. Chapels were cleaned up, new ones erected, the grounds landscaped, until the spirit of reverence met the people at the gate and went with them into the building enriching the service and inspiring the leaders to greater good, and a finer sense of cooperation and brotherhood. Finally at the end of their journey the three stopped on a high hill and viewed the results of the their efforts. "The plan has worked," said Pride. "I knew it would," said Faith. "It took a lot of energy," chimed in Perseverance. "But it was worth the effort. The state from end to end is as it should be. Unsightly things are replaced by beauty. There's a great power in that word, "Beautification", once folks get to using it." |
