Show Dixie Flyers Will Again Represent the Dixie District At State Tournament Mar. 19 to 22 The Dixie high school will once more represent the Dixie district in the State Tournament at the University of Utah field house on Mar. 19-22. The Flyers assured themselves this honor and prevented pre-vented a four-way tie-up in the league standings by downing Kanab Friday night 36-27. The game was played on the Cowboy court. Coach Hafen started the same line-up that did so well against Cedar City. Kay Hafen and Le-Grande Le-Grande Frei at forwards. Arlo Hafen at Center, and Wendell Tobler and Herbert Pitchforth at guards. These boys stayed in the game the entire period. The shifting shift-ing of Kay Hafen to forward has added considerably to his value to the team, and Arlo Hafen has made a nice adjustment at center. The win at Kanab was a clear-cut clear-cut victory, though the teams played on even terms during the first half, the Flyers then having the lead 14-12. Cedar City and Hurricane tied for second place, when Cedar tripped Parowan 36-23 and Hurricane Hur-ricane trounced Valley 46-27. Cedar City had been upset earlier in the week by Enterprise 35-39. Kanab finished fourth, Parowan J fifth. Enterprise sixth, and Valley holding to the cellar position without with-out a victory- What the chances of the Flyers in the state tourney are is an (Continued on page eight) i Basketball Tournament I (Continued from first page) enigma. There is no way to compare com-pare the relative strength of the northern teams with the southern. Ogden will be back strong to defend de-fend her title, and the Jordan team is picked by many to return re-turn the title to the Jordan district. dis-trict. The Dixie team will put up a fight to go as far as possible, and will not bow in. any game until the final whistle has blown. The team started the season as an underdog, and was doped to place not better than fifth in the district. The boys started off well, went into a slump during the middle of the season, and then came out with flying colors. At times the Flyers have looked like real champions. It is certain the Dixie team will not be picked by northern raters, but who knows, will history repeat re-peat itself ? The team is handicapped as to size, but the boys are fast and they will be in there with fire in their eyes. They should be in the peak of condition by the time the tourney starts. Dixie has stronger reserves this year than last, and that means a great deal in four days of strenuous stren-uous play. Earl Milne or Junior Neilson can be used at forward without preciptibly weakening the team, and Arlo Hafen can effectively ef-fectively shift to the guard position posi-tion if necessary. Alpine Prince, Victor Frei, Myrl Riding and Phil Reid have not seen quite as much action during the season as the other men, but all can be counted on to come through in a pinch. One of these four will have to be dropped from the foster, however, as only ten men are allowed to play in the state tourney. The boys will leave early Tuesday Tues-day morning for Salt Lake and will take a workout in the gym that afternoon. |
