Show Cubs vhurnp Angels m bcovvSe tfor first The Cubs and Angels both had records of 4-0 and were tied for first place going into games played on Saturday Satur-day and after Mustang League action the Cubs were 5-0 and the Angels were 4-1 due to a 30-17 victory by the Cubs over the Angels. A 5-0 advantage was owned by the Angels in the top of the first inning. John Thunehorst and Cory Martinsen led off the Angels with singles and Ray Goodrich and Chad Anderson connected con-nected for doubles. Kelly Bowden gained gain-ed a single and all five runners crossed home plate. However, the Cubs scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning for a 6 to 5 lead. Brian Van Tassell and Troy Kynaston singled. Troy Murray and Lisa Smuin smashed doubles. Jason Tolbert smashed a single. All five runners, run-ners, plus Bruce Hacking scored in the inning. The Angels scored one run in the top of the second inning to tie up the score at 6-6. Thunehorst and Cory Martinsen singled and Thunehorst scored the Angels' sixth run on a sacrifice fly by Goodrich. Eight runs were gained by the Cubs in the bottom of the second inning for a 14 to 6 advantage. Van Tassell, Kynaston and Murray singled. Smuin smashed a double to drive in some runs and Tolbert, Shane Turner drilled the baseball for singles. Hacking belted the ball for a double and Van Tassell, Kynaston and Murray gained their second se-cond singles in the second inning. Van Tassell scored twice in the inning and Kynaston, Murray, Smuin, Tolbert, Turner and Hacking also scored runs in the inning. The Angels cut the Cubs' lead to three runs, 14 to 11, with five counters in the top of the third inning. The first two batters, bat-ters, David Senti and Cory Hackford grounded out, but with two outs Jeff Martinsen, Tyler Nelson, Chris Hammond, Ham-mond, Thunehorst, Cory Martinsen and Goodrich singled. The two Martinsens, Nelson, Hammond and Thunehorst scored runs. A nine run eruption took place in the bottom of the third inning as the Cubs acquired a lead of 23 to 11. Turner and Murray smashed singles and both runners run-ners scored on a double by Hacking. Hacking was tagged out for the second out, but Kenny Robinson, Van Tassell, Kynaston and Murray singled and crossed cross-ed home plate with two outs. Tolbert belted a double and scored a run. Smuin and Turner also crossed home plate. The Angels weren't ready to throw in ' the towel as they scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning to narrow the Cub's lead to 23 to 15. Senti singled and was driven in on a double by Hackford. The next two batters committed outs. Hackford, Hammond and Thunehorst as well as Senti scored runs. However, the Cubs weren't finished in the run scoring department as they scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for a 30 to 15 lead. Flint Hamblin singled, Hacking doubled and Andrew Drollinger singled. Van Tassell gained a two base hit and Kynaston, Murray, Nicky Poitra and Turner slugged slug-ged the baseball for singles. Hamblin, Drollinger, Kynaston, Murray, Poitra and Turner scored runs. Two runs were scored by the Angels in the top of the fifth inning to make the final score: Cubs, 30 and Angels, 15. Anderson and Senti singled and both scored runs, but the Angels were unable to stage a miracle in the final inning and lost the game by 13 points.
