Show ( Voice of ffX Aunt Phoebe Tucker Hellow everyone! I'm glad to know the wind hasn't blown you all away. Monday's salmon loaf dinner had one hundred people in attendance. Rhae Wilkins was a first-timer at the dinner. Due to an error in scheduling the Friendship Band did not perform, but we have hopes to get them out from Salt Lake sometime. It was announced at the dinner that Thursday, June 11 there will be a picnic up Dry Fork Canyon. A bus will leave the Center at 10:30 a.m. The Uintah's Club will furnish a cold drink and chicken and you're on your own for the rest. We were very sorry to hear from Ralph Siddoway that our friend, Lillian Hoffmann is in the hospital in Salt Lake City with a broken hip. Next Monday, June 15 the dinner menu at the Center will feature that good fried chicken, potatoes and gravy, mixed vegetabless jello and green salad, rolls and blueberry cheesecake. Bingo winner for this week was lucky Ada Murray who won six games. The three runners up with four games each were Phyllis Warby, Elvira Slaugh and Alice Mott. John Brough and Richard Dow, guests of Gladys Dow were the only new faces at the dance Friday night. Richard danced all evening with a brand new friend, Kristie Behunin. He is seven years old and she is five. Happy birthday was sung to a good friend who comes all the way from Rangely to the dances: Hugh Murray. That man never stops smiling. The Senior Citizen Profile this week turns to Wells Pope. Wells is a regular Friday night dancer and he rarely misses the dinners at the Center. He was 75 last January spending 30 of those. years working in the oil field. He also painted for a living. He was married to Sheila Pitt for 46 years. She died in 1975. Two of their three children survive: Nina Pease who lives here in Vernal and Larry, residing in Moses Lake, Washington. Wells grows beautiful snow balls, peonies and lilacs in his yard and shares them generously with his friends and neighbors. He used to love fishing but doesn't go much any more. He swam the Green River when it was full when he was young and enjoyed it very much. Wells said, "I didn't start dancing until I was twelve." But he's made up for that slow start and he dances with all the girls each Friday. Wells Pope is a nice man to know. There is a corporation here in Vernal with the policy best summed up as BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR. TOSCO has a habit of contributing to non-profit organizations. They sponsor a city league Softball team and have made contributions to Search and Rescue, the Uintah Poetry Society, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Civil Air Patrol, and the Uintah County Library. Well now they've done a double-whammy good deed. George Cozart, resident manager for Tosco decided to support the youth and not so youth of our community at the same time. In the name of his company he bid on two hogs at the 4-H FFA annual stock show, purchasing this fine pork ' for $473.95. Then he donated the hogs to the nutrition program of the Golden Age Center. This prime meat was produced in Jensen by Brian and Tracy Snow. It will serve three delicious meals to 120 peopleat theCenter and 40 meals to the home bound senior citizens who have the food delivered. George explained that he was given a $750 check from TOSCO. He spent $473.95 on the hogs and the remaining $276.05 was donated to the 4-H equestrian program. The project was a much appreciated gesture and the senior citizens of Vernal want to thank TOSCO and George Cozart very very much. Happy birthday to Eva Pope, Maude Anderson. Elizabeth Weist, Harry Jorgensen, M. E. Goldston, Dick Uf-ford. Uf-ford. Ernie Hoeean. This is Aunt Phoebe saying, "A big mouth is nature's compensation for a small mind." Bye m .Uffltf '--1, Called "paddle" by enthusiasts, en-thusiasts, platform tennis is similar to lawn tennis, but it's played with a 14-ounce paddle and a softer, sponge rubber ball. Like any sport, "paddle" requires skill and practice. Lucky younusters in New York City got both as part of a 24-week training train-ing program at the Apple Platform Tennis Club, ..ui JT ZmA I taught by exports like Dick Squires, above. Spons6red by Uniroyal, maker of PRO-Keds, the training program was held in conjunction con-junction with the New York City Parks Department Junior Tennis Development Program. It's one way to keep youthful athletes paddling in the right direction. |
