Show CUBAN REVOLT FAILS 10 SHOW CBHTCflOM Washington Officials Regard Re-gard Situation With Less Apprehension; No Property Prop-erty Destroyed. FULL REGIMENT OF REGULARS DESERT Santiago Occupied by General Gen-eral Fernandez, Liberal Leader; Election Still in Doubt. WASHINGTON, Feb. 15. Failure to receive from Cuba today reports showing show-ing marked growth in the Liberal rebellion re-bellion caused administration officials to regard the situation there with less apprehension. Minister Gonzales's reports re-ports confirm earlier unofficial dispatches dis-patches telling of the dispersal of various va-rious rebel bands. They also told, however, how-ever, of the occupation of Santiago by General Fernandez, commanding more than a regiment of regular troops, who joined him in revolt. Satisfaction was displayed at the state department over information that so far the rebels have destroyed no property. It became evident today that the United States will make no move in Cuban affairs until they are more sharply defined by developments. Both factions have expressed to the department their approval of the notes of warning sent by Secretary Lansing. The liberal leaders have protested that thev are not contemplating any reign of "terror and President Menocal in a formal communication sent by his secretary sec-retary of foreign af fails thanked the American government for the confidence confi-dence it has shown in the Cuban people. peo-ple. He assured the government that with the moral support of the United States he felt certain he w-ould be able to dominate the situation. If it develops beyond doubt that the conservatives, supporting Menocal for re-election, have carried the province of Santa Clara, another special election in the province of Oriente must bo held, since to win the conservatives must have a plurality in both. A liberal lib-eral victory in Santa Clara would have been sufficient to have determined the result. |
