Affidavits Affida-vits sworn to at Boise. by W. Or. Craig, Hugb E. Rankin, Ned Hasbrouck and W. Winsobell-have been filed with the state department, allegiug that C; M. Booth of Twin Falls," ou February 3, told the signers that, as attorney" for the Japanese association of. Idaho,, he had brought pressure to bear on Hj Japanese ambassador and the state riVt partment which resulted in the protest which ultimately killed the Idaho anti- alien land bill. Booth admitted, according to thesi fidavit, that he operated through tam- uel Herrick, a Washington, attorney, ta r. whom he telephoned instructions at 'a -cost of $28.- Booth also asserted, according ac-cording to the affidavit, that the Japa-' nese ambassador had no intention of taking any action in the matter at tbis time until forced to do so by Booth. The affidavit quoted Booth as saying that his attorney at Washington "had practically forced the Japanese ambassador am-bassador .to file a protest with the Washington Wash-ington government and stand pat," and further stated that all the acts of the-' Japanese ambassador were due to press- ' ure brought by Booth, and pot to instructions in-structions from his government at Tokio. Senator Borah, when told tonight of the affidavits, said:-"I hope the secretary secre-tary of state, in view of these develop- . ments, will see fit to withdraw his objection ob-jection to the Idaho anti-alien land , bill and watch :the legislature put it' through.',' |
