Tbe Frankfurter Zeitung publishes a letter from Kiel describing de-scribing the departure of the German submarines from the harbor the day after the German proclamation of ruthless warfare war-fare came in force. It appears that the entrance to the submarine harbor of Kiel was decked with evergreens. The submarines were adorned with Christmas trees and bands on them played. The writer observes that it has been long the fashion to decorate these long, gray "sea devils'' when they put forthion great undertakings, 1ut a band aboard a submarine is something new. "February 1 was one of the most memorable mem-orable days in the history of the great war," he continues. "A number of new i submarines were in the squadron. There ! were nine submarines in this procession. There were few spectators to see a spec- ! tacle never seen yet of such proportions. 1 to watch the submarines going to meet , battle, death or victory." j |
