Show I COMPlAIN Of rOOR SfRVICf CITIZENS TESTIFY AGAINST WEST SIDE CAR LINE Council Committee Hears Evidence For and Against the Road and Will Recommend Improvements Last evening a special council committee com-mittee consisting of Callister Wallace Diehl and Fernstrom met to listen to the evidence concerning the alleged poor servlce given by the West Side Rapid Transit company The petition which was signed by 248 interested parties and propertyowners along the line of the road stated that the company com-pany was granted the franchise on May 2 1890 on condition that it build maintain and operate a car line keeping keep-Ing the tracks in repair furnishing cars with all ra modern improvements and running them a often a public convenience con-venience should require The petitioners claimed that the ties were all rotted away so that the space between the rails was full of big holes that the track was In such a condition that it was dangerous to run a car over i that only one man was employed to run the car and hence accidents were apt to occur that the service was so unreliable that it could not be depended de-pended upon the cars not running for days at a time and that the companys franchise prevented any other road from coming to the relief of the petitioners tioners toner The people were represented by Attorney At-torney James Smith while exSenator Brown looked after the Interests of the company A Ianre crowd of citizens were thereto to testify a to the allegations In the petition and a number of them were examined Messrs Folger Desky Green Lambert and Bennett testified that the road was in a deplorable condition con-dition The ties are nearly all gone and the bed is full of holes I is s bad that the rails are apt to spread and ditch the car at any time They said that the car was an old abandoned Salt Lake City companys car and was not fit for people to ride in that it was dangerous and unreliable not being capable of making the trip in bad weather They all testified that the car was apt to break down any trip and that frequently in the past it had not moved for days at a time The petitioners pe-titioners asked that the company be ttoner made to live up to the franchise or haveit revoked Mr Brown called Mr Riley and Mr Clawson employees of the company who claimed that the road was not so bad as represented 11 Nunn a brother to L L Nunn the owner of the franchise and his representative here said that he was representatve sal here for the purpose of thoroughly repairing re-pairing and equipping the line He said the line ihad been a losing investment and that It would now be Improved and vtfnri After hearing the evidence the committee com-mittee decided to report to the council that the road is poor and the service unsatisfactory and they will recommend recom-mend that the company be required I to immediately put In new ties repair I the roadbed furnish cars equipped with I all modern Improvements give a one I hour service from 630 a m until 1130 p m and comply with all the requirements I require-ments of the franchise I this is not done the franchise will be forfeited I company Sixty days to will comply probably be given the |
