Show PLAY ELEVEN INNINGS t High School Bests Saints In Long Contest i ROW OVER A DECISION t AN OUT AT SECOND CAUSES CONTROVERSY 4 Game Was Full of Gingery Playing By Members of Both Teams the Final Score Being 1 to 8 Against II the L D S Business College Boys Game at the Fort Today There has not been a closer or more exciting game of basebalj in Salt Lake this season than that which was played yesterday afternoon on the university campus Three hundred people mostly students held down the bleachers to see the high school and Latterday Saints business college teams play what turned out to be an eleveninning contest and most of it was redhot baseball too The high school boys won 14 to SIt S-It was after 4 oclock when the contest I con-test began threequarters of an hour I later than scheduled The game was a hot one after the third inning and almost al-most culminated in a fight in the ninth on a decision by Umpire Augustus The first part of the game was a little lit-tle slow but when the third inning had been played and the score stood 6 to 2 In favor of the high school boys the business representatives went to work in dead earnest A high school man crossed the home plate during the next three innings In the sixth the I eLe D I I S boys scored two runs a wild throw I by Tregea to Campbell at first letting in Margetts and Midgeley The next stage of the game added two more to the high school score thus making the contest stand 8 to 4 in favor of that school I looked as though the Saints must play swift ball to catchup catch-up but they did catch up the highs high-s hol by i a series of errors in the mnin jetting in lour runs This tied the score each side being credited with eight runs Another inning in-ning showed no change each side going go-ing out in one two three order and the crowd was aroused to the very topnotch of enthusiasm when Tregea weht to I i bat in the first half of the eleventh He I went out on a grounder to short Skld i moie faced the pitcher and hit to leftfield left-field and then it came Billy Smiths I turn to try his luck with the stick Trouble Breaks Loose I He lined the leather to Johnson at I short who Immediately turned and almost al-most handed the bal to Castleton at second Skidmore reached that spot at just about the same time and Umpire I Augustus called him safe Bedlam broke loose at once and players and crowd surged about second base where i Captain Margetts was giving vent to j 1 his wrath in indignant language Skld 1 i more was undoubtedly out at second but the umpire acknowledged he didnt i see the play and after a half hour of I I I I wrangling during which Margetts vain i ly 1 commanded his men to leave the field a compromise was effected Smith being sent back to the bat and Skid I more taking his previous position at frstThe The L D S boys were both so wild and rattled after this that the high school scored six runs during the inning in-ning making the score 1 to S as it finally stood Yesterdays game was not a pitchers contest both men being hit freely Howell was in better form than Holt but was replaced by AV Smith in the tenth Smith made a good record I striking out four men and keeping the Saints down to one basehit The remarkable re-markable part of the contest was the I fielding both of in and outfield on both teams Margetts was excellent at first The game was a very good one both sides playing lively ball almost throughout through-out the game and very few errors being be-ing made Home runs by Gardanler Margett and two by Howell were features fea-tures of the contest whereby he will take his men to Provo today and give the boys down there a return for the game I played here a week ago last Thursday The cheap rates for the Christian Endeavor r En-deavor excursion today offered such a good opportunity that Mr McKay thought it the best time for the contest con-test The University nine defeated Provo In their first game I I The Colts go to Ogden tomorrow to I play the Ogden combination An effort r de tc fg I is being made to get up a cheap excursion ex-cursion I I The talk among baseball people at present Is for the organization of a I state league Considerable difficulty i has thus far been experienced in mak j lag schedules and the formation of i j some definite organization of the ball clubs is being discussed as a means of i making a satisfactory arrangement of I dates for all teams concerned The nines now active in the field are the i i Ogden Salt Lake Short Line Colts and IJ G AA teams Later on the Browns I will doubtless be ready to play ballPark i Park City may also do so and In all probability a Pocatello aggregation A j league composed of these ballplayers j would certainly serve to make things j I very interesting for the baseball lovers In each community concerned and I much interest would be added to the sport i a definite arrangement were made at once for all games that are to I be played this season Not only would I e rivalry become more keen but the public I pub-lic interest would increase in proportion propor-tion I Is hoped that such an organization organ-ization as is proposed will speedily come into existence at least not later than June 1 Walter Eubanks the newY M C A pitcher will arrive in this city today from Matt on Ill whence he comes the well diamond endorsed as an excellent man on |
