Show ARRIVED SAFE IN PORT Missing Steamer Elihu Thompson at Santa Cruz Santa Cruz Cal May 1The disabled dis-abled steamer Elihu Thompson for which tugs have been vainly searching for over a week arrived at this port today under sail and dropped anchor off Lighthouse Point Captain Whitney and all on board are well The Thompson sailed from Honolulu with 1089 tons of sugar for San Francisco cisco When 520 miles from the latter port on the morning of April 30 her propeller broke and became useless Four hours later the transport Senator Sen-ator was sighted and in answer to signals sig-nals of distress came alongside the Thompson The Senator was preparing prepar-ing to take the disabled vessel In tow when the colonel commanding the troops on board the senator forbade I such delay in getting his men to Honolulu Hono-lulu a this would cause The captain of the Senator then offered to transport trans-port the officers and crew of the Thompson to Honolulu This offer was accepted by thirteen sailors Captain Whitney First Mate Angreton Second Mate Stevenson two engineers and three sailors remaining on the Thompson Thomp-son sonA supply of fresh provisions was taken on boa all sails were set and I the Thompson resumed her voyage For two days she drifted southward making mak-ing little progress Then more sails l anJahSe f were improvised canvas awnings and I I tarpaulins being utilized This enabled the vessel to make from thirty to thirtyfive miles headway a day Last Friday the City of Pekin was spoken but her offer to tow the Thompson to port was declined At 130 oclock this morning the steamer Santa Rosa was met off Pigeon Point and another offer of n tow was refused with thankb The Thompson would have made San Francisco today but owing to the fog her captain decided to put into this place She will be towed to her destination by the tug Fearless During her voyage heavy winds were encountered but the steamer er has arrived in good condition |
