Show AfllUSEMENTS i 1 USEAfElS I i 1 I was proved once more last night that Robin Hood is the brightest gem of them all and it is no wonder that itis demanded again and again notwithstanding not-withstanding the fact that the Bostonians Boston-ians have been doing the opera for the last ten years and have sung i over 3000 times The story of Robin Hood and his merry men in Sherwood forest for-est is as attractive as ever and De Kovens music has a perfect wealth of tunefulness He has tried many times but has never been able to duplicate the success of this opera in any other work The airs are never hackneyed in sound though familiar and they seem to become more pleasing through their familiarity The gems of the opera are many in number but were all handled well by the company and encores were demanded without a single sin-gle exception The result of this as before was an exceedingly lengthy performance The Salt Lake audience always demands an encore for the first number then seems to be afraid of offending everyone else s continues I the practice throughout the evening considering neither the hour the situation sit-uation nor the singer Mr Barnabeo came into his own again and was the same delightful sheriff of Nottingham The opera of Robin Hood would simPly sim-Ply go to pieces without Mr Barnabee In this part He was in splendid trim last night and showed no trace of his recent indisposition Jessie Bartlett Davis AlanaDale Is too well known to require much comment I is sufficient suffi-cient to say that she was her own magnetic self and sang the part as though it were new to her this season The audience heard 0 Promise 10 with breathless interest and I was most beautifully rendered I was sang 1 with an even richness of tone and a degree of intensity which made Mrs Davis rendition famous long ago and on account of which it has retained its popularity Helen Bertram was a dainty dain-ty Maid Marian and sang the Forest Song in excellent style MacDonald was a rood Little John and won a hearty recall for the Brown October Ale song although he sounds a trifle sung out Mr Savin was a satisfactory satis-factory Robin Hood and Mr Broder ick a dashing H Scarlet The latter had no easy task in singing against the memory of Cowles whom the peo I I pie can never forget but leaving comparison I com-parison out of the question and judging judg-ing Broderick by his own merits which are not few he is a very satisfactory I member of the organization He won a hearty recall in The Armourers Song Frothinpham was the same quaint delightful Friar Tuck and I while the part does not afford him many opportunities none of them escape es-cape him As Guy of Gisborne Fitzgerald Fitz-gerald demonstrate his versatility and gave an excellent portrayal of the village blockhead who would do anything any-thing to be the Earl of Huntington Josephine Bartlett was a good Dame Durden and Carolyn Daniels was a sweet Anabel The audience was most enthusiastic throu hout the evening and it was plainly evident that Robin Hood is still the prime favorite of the repertoire toire at least In this city I will be repeated at the matinee this afternoon with the same cast Including Mrs Davis and Mr Barnabee In fact all the principals will appear at both performances per-formances today as Mr Barnabee has completely recovered and feels himself able to do both of his favorite parts the sheriff in the afternoon and the Duke of Santa Cruz in the evening The Steindel Concert company will arrive in Salt Lake this morning and will spend three days here resting and sightseeing A pleasant hour will be spent at the tabernacle choir tonight with the big choir only when selections tions will be rendered by each for the entertainment of the others The etertanment other concert night con-cert in the tabernacle occurs Monday |
