of the Absence of Two Members Parents Appoint a I Committee to Search For People Opposed to McCoy + To convince the patrons of the Oquirrh school that they were not treated in an extremely discourteous manner at the hands oCcertain members mem-bers of the board against last evening will be a difficult task When the hour arrived for holding the boards adjourned meeting the session ses-sion room was crowded with mothers and fathers of Oquirrh pupils and about a score of older students It was a representative assembly Only a few however of the schools patrons who were frozen out Wednesday evening were present They came with the expectation ex-pectation of witnessing the boards proceedings pro-ceedings in open scsion on the disposition disposi-tion of Professor McCoys case but once more were they doomed to disappointment dis-appointment Eight members of the board were present Messrs JCelaen Critchlow Bamberger Moyle Glauque Newma Henderson and Wilson Just about S oclock word was telephoned by Mr Young that he had sprained his ankle and therefore ould not attend the meeting It was known that Mr Walker was out of town so it was certain that the full membership would be short two Killing Time All but Messrs Nolden IJamberger and Critihlow were anxious to convene the meeting and if nothing Avas to be done during the evening with the McCoy Mc-Coy case they wanted the patrons given courteous notice of the fact Pleading that the minutes of the last meeting did not show a regular adjournment ad-journment President Nelden took the lead in declaring that u meeting in open session could not then be held unless un-less all members were present and contented con-tented I Thus an hour and a quarters time was spent in doing nothing excepting that Messrs Nelden and Critchlow undertook un-dertook to convince several groups of parents that they were wrong and the two gentlemen right on the controversy contro-versy centering around the question ot school discipline At 013 despite President Pres-ident Neldens contention that any bus imss done in open session would be irregular ir-regular the members went into the star chamber for the stated purpose of passing upon certain matters that I Chairman Critchlow said had the right of way before the McCoy case The adjournment Wednesday midnight mid-night was in the midst of the consideration consider-ation of Mr McCoys case but President Presi-dent Nelden suggested that the committee com-mittee of the wholes order of business should be taken up where the McCoy matter Interrupted It McCoy Case Postponed Out of respect to the waiting assembly assem-bly of patrons and because he believed the flnal consideration of the McCoy case was of such great importance that a full board should be present Judg Henderson moved that action upon the Oquirrh prinfipalship be postponed until un-til Messrs Walker and Young were in attendance The motion prevailed and Chairman Critchlow conveyed the information in-formation to the assembled mothers and fathers out in the public session room I Later in the evening after the secret meeting had adjourned President Nfl den stated that Tuesday evening tle committee of the whole would meet to consider the remaining business in hand namely that of the employment of principals for next year He said that probably on Wednesday or Thursday Thurs-day evening if a full membership of the board could be secured a public meeting would be held to ratify what had been agreed upon in private session ses-sion At that time he added the Me COj matter would probably be settled Mr BambcrKcr however interjectd the remark that the question of Mr McCoys principalship would first have to be passed upon in executive session I Another Indignation Sleeting But the throng of fathers and mothers moth-ers were not satisfied Chairman Critchlows announcement that final consideration of the question of retaining retain-ing or dismissing Principal McCoy had icon postponed did not please them Before disbanding the patrons rallied to the large room to hear Fred C Loof oourim propose P A Dix for chairman Mr Dix was elected and on taking the rostrum asked the pleasure of his fellows fel-lows Mr J S Daveler said they had come there for the definite purpose of hearing hear-ing what public action the school board would take on the Oquirrh principal ship and also to approve or disapprove of the board holding secret meetin son s-on such a matter of vital public Im lH > rtanee as this one Then warming up Mr Daveler declared nit seems tome to-me that the board is trying to make ascap a-scap oat of Mr McCoy who T bo ileve is one of the best principals in the city If Mr McCoy should resign it would be an admission that he resorted re-sorted tu undue severity in punishing that bIn who so much merited chastisement chas-tisement Some members of the board want to transfer our principal to some other school in order to avoid a scandal scan-dal I want to say that any man who makes such an utterance is unfit to ie a member of the board of education This is like a large corporation We own the majority bf stock and the board of directors the school board mst do our will the peoples will or there will be trouble Mr Davelers speech was punctuated with liberal and hearty applause Patrons Choose a Committee Mr DaveU suggested that the sentiment sen-timent of tile schools patrons was almost al-most unanimous for the retention of Principal McCoy but that it might newell ne-well to appoint a committee to look up those who had some objections to hs method of discipline The suggestion was adopted and S J Lynn L J Puf flemyer A T Moon Mrs F C lcd sey Mrs J M Denny and Mrs D 1 L Davis were chosen a committee to urge the pesenee at the next meeting of the board of those if any who held opposite op-posite views to the protestants in the Oquirrh district The patrons then adjourned quietly t to meet at the call of the pr siceiu ot the board for a public session On the way out the sentiment was expressed that the boards adverse notion < no-tion on the Oquirrh patrons request for the retention of Mr McCoy in the principalship would result in a rousing massmeeting pf citizens demanding I the resignation of the members of the board who opposed McCoy In Secret Session ihe reporters attended the executive session of the board members for a few minutes until Mr < Critchlow urged their expulsion Then a running debate ensued en-sued between him and the reporters on L the propriety of secret sessions However How-ever on the assurance of the board members that the McCoy case would S not be considered and that Mr Critch 10w wouldjnform the press representatives representa-tives after the meeting of such matters as were proper for publication the reporters re-porters consented to try it once and IC > kept away from the end of the pipeline pipe-line IInCIn In the executive session a communication communi-cation was read from the entire corps of Oquirrh
