Show STIR U WAB DEPABTMENT Deep Interest Caused By Action of Nebraskans Washington May lXo dispatch re I ccived recently from Manila has been received with deeper interest at the war department than that which was stnt by the Associated Press via Hong king War department officials and army oflicials did not care to be quoted upon the subject but the comment generally gen-erally among army officers was that the troops which had been fighting so long and continuously are exhausted el and would be really in need of rest I was explained the men did not fear ligHting but constant picket and constant con-stant marching no doubt much exhausted ex-hausted them Some arm officers Kiir jjested the action of the Nebraskans as like a town meeting and that an army could not be conducted upon such lines Comment was made to the effect ef-fect that the dispatches indicated indictel various var-ious regiments were on duty constantly constant-ly and that there was no reserve to relieve them when they reached the limit of endurance It was stated by an officer in the department Ie partment that one reason why it had been impossible to relieve the volunteers volun-teers wlttt the regulars now at Manila was because the regulars recent sent to the Philippines were at least two thirds recruits and were necessarily untrained and lacked the discipline of the volunteers who are now veterans It is believed General Otis does not care to risk the hard lighting to untried men and that htv desires the volunteers to remain at the front because he is sure of them in any emergency |
