Show WAR RESULTS IN RECHECK OF DRAFT AGE MEN With the formal declaration of war on the part of the United States against Axis powers, selective select-ive sevice plans have rapidly changed and a new law has been presented for congressional approval ap-proval to change selective service from a peace-time to a war-time basis. In view of the present situation, it has become necessary to ask local lo-cal boards to carefully reclassify all registrants who have previously previous-ly been granted deferments, in order or-der to bring a larger number of registrants into Class I to be available avail-able to fill future calls for men in the armed forces. All previously granted student deferments will terminate with the end of the present fall quarter or term of college. Students, as such, will receive no further consideration considera-tion for deferment except those in training for certain necessary occupations oc-cupations such as engineering, medicine, me-dicine, and chemistry. All 'men who have heretofore been deferred because of physical condition, will be rechecked especially espe-cially when only borderline impairments impair-ments exist. Whereas, in the past, the registrant has been given the benefit of the doubt, all such cases must now be resolved in favor of the government. Major H. A. Rich, acting state director of selective service for Utah, states that local selective service boards and registrants generally gen-erally realize that these steps are necessary at this time, and that full cooperation will be given in reclassifying re-classifying all registrants to produce pro-duce a pool of sufficient Class I men to enable the state of Utah to continue to fill every quota as called call-ed for by the armed forces. |
