Show The Bed Cross Volunteer Program The Red Cross services we know today could not have been imagined by Clara Barton and the small group who gathered in Washington in 1 88 1 to form the American Red Cross. STARTING FROM a prim- ary mission of disaster relief, .the organization expanded to comprise an amazing variety of services designed to meet the changing needs of the American people. One of the most vital services ser-vices provided by the Red Cross is its blood bank and its support of related research. Every 17 seconds someone in the United States needs blood. The person you help may be victims of an accident or a fire. People in shock, infants or mothers, sufferers from leukemia leuke-mia or hemophilia, or patients undergoing surgery. The Red Cross supplies many hospitals throughout the U.S. with life-saving life-saving blood. THE RED Cross provides an enormous service to the military, milit-ary, veterans and their families. fami-lies. You can contact the Red Cross 24 hours a day and let them know what the emergency emergen-cy is. They can help you contact con-tact service men and women and answer any question concerning con-cerning a problem. They assist and counsel and have a referral -program to help military personnel per-sonnel and their families. Water safety, courses in fitness, fit-ness, swimming for the handicapped, hand-icapped, mother and baby care courses, boat safety, home-making, home-making, CPR instructor courses, and leadership development de-velopment camp are some of the many courses conducted under the auspices of the Red Cross. The Red Cross also provides pro-vides transportation for the elderly and nutrition maintai-nance. maintai-nance. AND, OF course, the Red Cross has been recognized for many years for its emergency service. The Red Cross provides pro-vides assistance to flood victims vic-tims and earthquake victims in the form of shelter, food, clothing clo-thing and medical services during dur-ing an emergency period. At the heart of the Red Cross is its volunteer program. The Salt Lake area Red Cross is 1,100 volunteers. What could be more rewarding than to bring relief to humanity in pain and suffering. THIS YEAR, $395,000 of your United Way dollars have been allocated to the Salt Lake Area Red Cross Chapter to help maintain these vital services. ser-vices.
