Show Named All-American By DAVE WIGHAM BOUNTIFUL Too many times the high school athletes around these parts of the country coun-try have to play second fiddle to those back East somewhere. some-where. You would especially expect the female athletes out here in the boonies to be overlooked over-looked but recently one of the most talented gals to play in the state was honored. DEBBIE ASPER, who has been a big cog in the Vikings women programs for three years, was selected as a high school All-American in basketball bas-ketball by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association. . Debbie was one of 100 girls chosen throughout the nation for her play this past season. Selections were made through district and regional girls sports program. Initially the girls were nominated by their coaches or by other high school coaches. The finalists from each state were then evaluated eva-luated by the National Girls Sports Selection Committee. MISS ASPER finished out a great three year career at Viewmont this past year in leading the Vikings to the state 3A basketball title. This marked the third season in a row that the Vikings had played play-ed for a state title. They won the 4A when Deb was a sophomore, sopho-more, placed second when she was a junior and then won it as a senior. :...c-.v..".r.- w '' ''' fi ' , M-"4 Iff! iV:;:.P DEBBIE ASPER As a sophomore Deb burst onto the basketball scene in great style averaging 13 points a game in both season and state playoffs. This club went 21-0 and won the state crown. Those points went up as a junior when she scored 19.2 points during the season and then 19.5 in the state event while compiling a 19-2 record. In both cases they won the region re-gion title. THINGS GOT even better as a senior when Debbie averaged aver-aged 23 points a game during the season and then 22 points per outing in the state event includingone31 point outingm the semifinals against Ogden. Over her three year career then Deb scored 1,223 points' for an average of 18.8 points and also averaged 1 1 rebounds per game over the three seasons. sea-sons. BASKETBALL wasn't her only sport as she played three years of volleyball at Viewmont View-mont and participated in track and field for two years winning the region high jump event as a senior. Miss Asper was also pretty good in the classroom as she graduated 32nd in her class this . past year with a 3.8 gpa. She was also selected as the winner of the Exemplary Athlete award at the school which annually goes to the girl for outstanding achievement in athletics, scholarship and citizenship. DEB WILL continue her basketball career this fall at the University of Utah where she plans to major in pre-med. A great honor for a great young lady to be selected All-American. |
