Show i HELD SECRET MEETING I j i McKinley Republicans Have An Exclusive I clusive Gathering t 1 I I ONLY A FEW INVITED t I I THIBTYITVE OUT OP POSSIBLE I 1 I 150 WERE PRESENT i Proposed to Reorganize State league of Republican Clubs From the Scant Material That Is Available For the PurposeSome Erstwhile Silver Champions on Hand k Thirtyfive Republicans out of a possible pos-sible 150 assembled in room 602 Tem pleton building last night and jammed wind for two hours on conditions The purpose of the meeting was to perfect plans for reorganizing a league ot Republican Re-publican clubs in Utah The membership member-ship of the clubs has dwindled so much that It would be possible to hold a mass convention of them in an elevator car Here lately though the chief push of the McKinley column has been greatly heartened by the flop of the Tribune over to the Hanna outfit As evidence of the sincerity of its purpose pur-pose the Trbune had two of its ablest representatives at the meeting Mr iannan himself was unable to attend but he sent Postmaster Thomas and I Jimmy Devine Sutherland Was There I J George Sutherland the great silver be 1 champion was there also It will remembered that George received several 1 sev-eral votes for senator durinc the last I session of the legislature dn the express ex-press condition and assurance that he I 1 was the greatest friend of silver that I ever traveled over the pike Georges presence at last nights meeting will I I cause some doubt as to the sincerity of his advocacy of 16 to 1 Arthur Parsons who was one of Frank Cannons managers during the I senatorial fight was on hand Arthur i seems to have apostatized slnca he got out from under Franks wing Last nights meeting was an exceedingly exceed-ingly exclusive affair It partook largely of the nature of a private conference con-ference Only 150 invitations ere sent out and these were confined almost entirely en-tirely to the city Bill Classman of Ogden Og-den got one and was to have made the speech of the evening Unfortunately I t for William though his train was late I and he rushed into the meeting a moment mo-ment after it had adjourned Swen Neilsen was up from Fairview and Brig Jones of Box Elder showed up Hoyt Sherman Reads Call Hoyt Sherman called the magnificent assemblage to order He read a lengthy typewritten call It directed attention 2 to the appointment of a commttee to I do the work of reorganization This committee was named by the state executive ex-ecutive committee at the suggestion of S the Republican National League It is made up of B H Jones of Box Elder William Glasmann of Weber John Henry Smith and George Sutherland of Salt Lake and James Clove of Utah The call was full of charming little compliments for members of the organization organ-ization collectively It was a sort of sugarcoat for the pill all silver Re publcans are expected to swallow if i they return to the fold After Mr Sherman I I Sher-man finished John T Lynch was I elected to preside and Alex Robertson I was made secretary Then all the boys made speeches I Senator Brown Starts Ball ExSenator Arthur Brown started the ball by giving it as his opinion that the Republicans who have strayed from the party are now ready to return He thought a thorough organization should be prfected in all the incorporated cities of the state to prepare to carry the municpal elections next fall That done Senator Brown believed the Republicans Re-publicans could win In the state The exsenators reputation as a political t prophet will not be helped any by his I talk of last night Strangely enough the other lads fell right in with his theory Postmaster Thomas agreed with him for the first time in many a day It is alleged that Arthur has had an idea that he is the whole cheese aside from Marse Pat but hes willing to buckle down now and reorganize I Devine Also Talked J Chief Devine also talked in the same strain So did Dan Harrington George 4 Buckle Chris Diehl James Clove Dennis f Den-nis Eichnor and George Sutherland 1 There was great unanimty It would have been hard to find more hannonv 1 in so small a gathering Everybody tried to be mild and genial and cordial for they all realized that Billy OMeara and the other boys who hadnt been invited in-vited are likely to kick over the traces when they read about the meeting After passing a resolution pledging those present to assist the general committee com-mittee the reorganizers adjourned without day A moment later here I came Bill Classman all out of breath with the speech he wanted to make nicely tucked under his arm Bill vas I greatly disappointed when he found out he wouldnt have a chance to sneak but Chairman Lynch refused to reconvene re-convene the meeting j I Wesley K Walton chairman of the I Republican state committee had been invited to attend and was in the city but Wesley is not disposed to reorganize I reorgan-ize on an embalmed beef basis just at I I this stage II |
