Show CONSTITUTION OF DENMARK Tomorrow will mark an epoch in the history of Denmark Fifty years ago on the 5th of June 1849 King Frederick VH attached his signature to the constitution con-stitution of the kingdom of Denmark an event which Was destined to mark the beginning of a new era for its people peo-ple It is true that the country was not entirely without a constitution for In 1831 King Frederick VI granted a constitution which established an assembly as-sembly of nobles but in that constitution constitu-tion the common people were entirely left out of consideration and conditions condi-tions were but little better than before be-fore During the years following Prince Frederick then the crown prince w s studying the conditions and needs of the people over whom he was later to ralsrn TT unuirt minela un known with people of all classes drink with thereat the inns and discuss politics poli-tics with them hence his father had been dead but a week when the young king announced that he Intended to give his people a new constitution Like our American constitution It declared de-clared all men born with equal rights and no class had any privileges over another the legislative power was vested in the upper and lower houses of the rigsdag elected almost exclusively by the people the king retaining the veto power which however he never once exercised It further granted perfect per-fect freedom of speech and press free and compulsory education and religious liberty From now on the intellectual and industrial in-dustrial development of the Danish people was something phenomenal It is true they have had their internal strifes because the nobility held onto what they believed to be their Goo given rights and only yielded inch by inch Hardly had the beloved king closed his eyes in death when the country coun-try was thrown into another war with its powerful neighbor which left it bleeding exhausted and deprived of two of its provinces Yet today Denmark is among the most prosperous and cultured cul-tured nations on earth Though but oneseventh the area of Utah it sustains sus-tains two millions of people and exports ex-ports vast quantities of agricultural products of butter alone some J35000 000 annually It Is therefore with full right that the Danes all over the world will gather gath-er tomorrow and celebrate their Fourth of July In this city they have prepared a programme for Capers Cap-ers park assisted by their foster brothers the Swedes and Norwegians They have the sympathy and congratulations congrat-ulations of the American people and their best wishes for the future prosperity pros-perity of a nation which has furnished our country with so many bf its useful citizens |
