Show DREYFUS IS INNOCENT One French officer after another has confessed his part in the conspiracy against the French government of which Dreyfus was convicted and his part in the second conspiracy with the government against the prisoner of Devils island One has committed suicide sui-cide another has attempted it both were trusted officers in the French army and leading witnesses for the prosecution Colonel Henry Paty du Clam and Es terhazy have all owned up that the unfortunate un-fortunate victim of militarism and religious re-ligious prejudice who has suffered a thousand deaths in his prison cage on a desert island has more honor In his heart than can be found in all the ministers min-isters judges officers and politicians of France who have been persecuting him For more than four years this infamy has been perpetuated in the name of France and for the purpose as was declared de-clared of shielding the honor of the army Few persons who have followed the case dispassionately have believed in the guilt of Dreyfus The mystery of the original trial and the conflicting seasons assigned for secrecy the manifest man-ifest hostility of the courts at all subsequent sub-sequent proceedings the undisguised malice of the prosecution caused public pub-lic opinion in this country and in Europe Eu-rope to look with horror upon his treatment treat-ment Outside of the few Frenchmen personally interested in his conviction for selfpreservation the French people peo-ple themselves admit that there has never been more than a possibility of his tIn t-In view of recent publications of the evidence given before the court of cassation cas-sation there is little room to doubt the absolute innocence of the man and this confession of Esterhazy leaves no longer any room for doubt at all It has been an infamous piece of business all the way through Yet if it hadnt been for the perseverance of a true woman the loyalty of a devoted wife Dreyfus would have been forgotten forgot-ten long ago and remorse would never have haunted the conspirators until the nemesis drove some to confession and others to suicide I |
