Show I BOOKKtEPEH UNDER ARREST HENRY VOGEL CHARGED WITH FORGING CHECKS Alleged That He Used the Name of His Employer Bichard Stenzel Five TimesTwo Complaints Henry Fogel in the employ of Richard Rich-ard Stenzel the furrier as bookkeeper was arrested yesterday afternoon for forgery The charge was first preferred by A Moyer who received and cashed a forged check for Fogel Moyers complaint com-plaint was followed by a warrant of arrest ar-rest sworn out by Stenzel covering the same ground In all the accused Is supposed to have forged his employers name to five checks In amounts aggregating aggre-gating 76 The checks were drawn on the Commercial National bank and all except the one which led to his detection detec-tion passed the tellers hands and were I honored Mr Stenzel in making up his accounts ac-counts yesterday and comparing his returned May checks discovered evidences 4 evi-dences of crooked work The last check Fogel cashed was for 25 payable I pay-able to A Moyer with whom Fogel I lodged and who endorsed and cashed it at Nelson Goods saloon They deposited I de-posited it with Walker Bros bank and i when sent bj the latter to the Commercial i Commer-cial National was returned over the ground It had come and finally to I Moyer The forgery had been detected I I I detect-ed and Moyer at once notified the police po-lice One hour later Fogel was caught I I by Officer A Smith on State street and locked up Mr Stenzel had learned of the forged check having first told the banking I house to watch for it and had a wart war-t rant for Fogels arrest Issued from Sommers court It Is still in the hands j of the constable The county has the i warrant the city the man and there is apt to be more friction Mr Sten I zel found that the last forged check I being for 25 was entered on the stub for 5 The check was payable tot to-t Moyer but the stub record was order I of R Stenzel It is a novel scheme very shrewdly carried out Five instances I in-stances of forgery were detected all I executed within the past two weeks Some checks were payable to Moyer I I whom Fogel solicited to have cashed because he claimed he was unknown t except at the bank while two of the ter f five were payable to Fogel himself Mr Stenzel talked with Fogel at the police station last evening The latter claims he was authorized to sign his employers name but the furrier of course denies ever givIng him any such Authority i |
