Show I MORGAN IN THE PEN l i i Boy Desperado Who Is Under Death Sentence J + GIVEN COUGHLINS CELL HAD > WOMEN ADMIRERS AT BRIGHAM CITY One Weakminded Female Actually fell In love With Him Execution Execu-tion Will Probably Be Postponed Expects a New Trial and An I Acquittal reeling Cheerful t Well shoothim up there In the corner cor-ner of Hhe yard if he Is finally executed exe-cuted said Warden Dow of the state penitentiary referring to Morgan the boy desperado The warden Is not a coldblooded man but he talks about such matters in a calm way The punishment of criminals does not excite him for he has convicts about him until he is used to them Morgan was brought down from Brigham City yesterday morning by Sheriff Cordon and Deputy Sheriff Thompson They took him to the penitentiary pen-itentiary and turned him over to the warden to remain until he is I executed exe-cuted or Is released by a nw trial The officers experienced no trouble in bringing bring-ing their prisoner down He was calm and quiet and caused them no uneasiness > un-easiness ff It will be remembered that Judge f e Hart of Box Elder county before whom this boy less than 19 years old was tried for the murder of Captain Brown the Ogden police officer sentenced him to be shot instead of hanged The law of Utah has enough regard for the man convIcted of murder to give him his choice between being hanged or being shot When Judge Hart asked Morgan what manner of death he chose he replied that he wanted to be shot and he was sentenced to be shot on July 7 within the walls of the state penitentiary peniten-tiary Will Be Postponed But it is not likely that he will be executed on that day Prosecuting Attorney At-torney B H Jones who appeared against the prisoner does not think that the future legal proceedings can be concluded by that date Mr Jones was In town yesterday and he and his wife are at the Walker House The attorneys for the defense R H Jones and William Chase of Brigham City have prepared the transcript to be submitted sub-mitted to the state supreme court 14 when the argument for a new trial will be made The court has adjourned to an early date In July so that it Is unlikely I un-likely that an argument could be made and a decision had before July 7 Inconsequence In-consequence the attorneys will probably prob-ably ask for a stay of execution which if grantedand there is not much i doubt of that will require Morgan to be taken back to Brigham City for another T an-other sentence o v The boy was cool and calm yesterday I b at the penitentiary There was no I trace of nervousness about him and he ate heartily He did not want to leave the Box Elder county Jail at Brigham for he has been treated very kindly i Women Admirers There has been a softening of the strong feeling against him Women have grown sentimental and maudlin Howers and candies magazines newspapers news-papers and pretty things have bean < sent to him and he has had many visitors I vis-itors One woman whose name I wont mention actually fell in love with the boy said Attorney Jones yesterday She hung about the jail and wanted Cordon to see him every time Sheriff opened the door I feel all right said Morgan yesterday yes-terday at the penitentiary I am confident that I will get a new trial and that at it I will be acquitted for I didnt shoot Captain Brown My brother did it just before he was killed Why some of the jurors before they were chosen were heard to say that they would convict me and meant to I do so if they got on the Jury Morgan was placed in cell No ISO In the south cell house which was occupied i occu-pied by the last murderer executed In UtahPatsy Coughlan He and Fred I George who is serving a life sentence in the penitentiary killed Sheriff Stagg of Echo and Constable Dawes of Wyoming Wyo-ming who wanted them for horse stealing in Wyoming Coughlan was executed in Rich county in December chose to be of 1S96 He like Morgan shot rather than to be hanged Morgan Mor-gan does not know that he occupies 0 J the same cell but as he is not at all r superstitious the knowledge will not 7 disturb him |
