Show LEjtDCrQS CI023 TraEi r.:::t To Coy By DAVE WIGHAM LAYTON - For the second week in a row the Layton track team came up against a strong opponent. For the second straight week the Lancers gave their opponents all they wanted before losing by a narrow margin. THIS TIME the Lancers lost a 76-71 decision to Roy. Layton coaches have indicated in-dicated that they have some top talent, ones which could be region champions, but they indicate that they may lack depth needed to win the dual meets. Evidence of this is the fact that the Lancers won seven of the events in this meet, they swept one event, the javelin. DARRIN Stevens won the mile with teammate John To-taro To-taro in second place, then Stevens went on to win the two mile event with John Clements taking third. Speedster Charles Waller took top honors in the 220, which is his specialty, and a third place spot in the 100 yard dash. Senior Maurice Turner, better known for running over defensive backs, took first place in the long jump with a leap of 18-11. BILLY PILES and Gordon Anderson combined to give the Lancers a first and third finish in the high jump while Mark Wall, DeWayne Stark and Ron Atkinson swept the javelin event with the winning throw measured at 162 feet. Junior Chuck Ehin won his event, the shot put. with a loss of 50' 11" and then placed second in the discus. Chuck is the defending region champion cham-pion in the shot put. BRENT BAUER took a couple of seconds in (he hurdle races, both in the 120 low hurdles and the 330 intermediate inter-mediate event while another Lancer. David Wallace took third in the 330 race. Dave Coryell got more points for Layton with a second place effort in the 880. Layton's other points came on the third place finish of Jim Kidd and Brian Latt in the pole vault, these two tied for third place. LAYTON HAS come close on two occasions, soon they're going to bust out of the blocks and really clean up on someone. Roy has a good well-balanced club with the depth that the Lancers don't have. |
