The first Van, Creator Spsri- iietnas a hymn of appeal to which the Faust movement is an answer. The closing scene describes the ascent of Faust's soul into heaven and is an affirmation of life. IN SPEAKING of the symphony, Mahler said, "All my earlier symphonies are but preludes to this one. My other works are all tragic and subjective: this one is a great dispenser of joy!" The Eighth calls for the largest forces in symphonic history. In addition to the three choruses and seven soloists, the scoring calls for supplemented instrumental sections. IN remarking on the overall effect of the work, Mahler said, "Imagine to yourself the entire universe suddenly beginning to sound and sing! There are no longer human voices, but revolving suns and planets." Maestro Abravanel and the Utah Symphony were the first orchestra in the world to record all of the Mahler symphonies, including the unfinished Symphony No. 10. MR. Abravanel has received worldwide recognition recogni-tion for his conducting of the Mahler symphonies and in 1975 was awarded a plaque for the best Mahler recording released in that year, the Utah Symphony's recording of Symphony No. 5. Tickets for the concert may be purchased at the Utah Symphony box office, 55 West 1st South, or at the ticket booth located outside the south gate of Temple Square one hour before the concert. |
