Show T-birds open season with Road Games There might be snow on the ground but Southern Utah State's baseball squad opens the 1977 season this week. The T-Birds meet Cal State, Fullerton (Thursday) in a doubleheader and face Southern California College (Friday) in a single game and (Saturday) in another doubleheader. All games will be on the road. Fullerton was the NCAA Western Regional runnerup last season and had a 1977 record of 15-3 as of last week. The Titans own two impressive victories over NCAA champion University of Arizona. Southern Cal College beat the T-Birds two of three games last season, with Southern Utah's only win a 1-0 shutout by LaRon Unck. Coach Geo Petty, now in his twenty-sixth season as head coach, will throw senior righthanders Jim Tillotson, Centerville, and Bob Weidmann, Garden Grove, Calif., Thursday while Friday Provo freshman Garn Jorgensen, a righthander, gets the call. Saturday, freshman lefthander Scott Bell of Highland High in Salt Lake City and Unck, senior righthander from Ogden, will do the hurling. The T-Birds' starting lineup and batting order will have Ivan Otero (3B) leading off, Tony Zockoll (RF) batting second, Tony Pappas (LF) third, Mike Marini (IB) fourth, Warren Hatch (C) fifth, Rick Kienast (2B) sixth, Lowell Anderson (DH) seventh, Danny Nuttall (SS) eighth, and Dave Buffington (CF) ninth. After the trip to California, the T-Birds will resume action April 1 and 2 with four games in Grand Junction against Mesa College. |
