SUSC Math Students garner Honors Two Southern Utah State College coeds have received awards for their performance in solving mathematical problems with the use of a calculator. Freshmen Camee Blood, Antimony, and Lillian Lewis, Moapa, Nev. received the awards from the Victor Educational Services Iastitute in Chicago, 111., a part of the Victor Comptometer Corporation. Both girls took the test as top performers in a SUSC Business Machines Math class. The two-part two-part examination included testing in the use of the calculator to successfully add columns of figures and to make various mathematical calculations. "The first part is a 10-minute exercise in which the student must successfully add some 30 columns of figures, each containing con-taining 12 entries with up to five digits per entry," Van L. Bushnell, class instructor, explains. ex-plains. "The second, an untimcd section, involved :i.r problems including percents, discounts, fractions and the general use of the calculator," he said. The Commendation Award, Victor's highest rating, is given when the student successfully adds over 25 columns of figures in the first section and gets 33 of the 35 questions right in the second section. A Gold Certificate is awarded for 20-24 correctly added columns and 30 correct mathematical problems. A Silver Certificate is awarded for successful completion of 15-19 columns and 28 of the 35 figuring problems. "Ms. Blood received the Commendation Award," Dr. Bushnell said. "Ms. Lewis received the Gold Certificate, missing the Commendation Award by only one point." "The examination is an excellent ex-cellent means in which the student can measure his or her progress in the use of the calculator," Bushnell said. "We are very pleased with the accomplishments ac-complishments of these two girls." Ms. Blood is a 1970 graduate of Piutre High School. She ' is a business major at SUSC and is a member of Lambda Delta Sigma. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alton Blood, Antimony. Ms. Lewis is a 1976 graduate of Moapa Valley High School. She is majoring in business and home economics at SUSC and is a member of the Latter Day Saint Student Association. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Lewis, Moapa. 4 ( 1 1 Hi!
