Show INDIAN STORIES FOR LITTLE FOLKS . ' 1 BY CHIEF TAHAN. In the far-away-timo there were giant warriors of the mountains, enemies ene-mies of our tribe. They wero tall as tepees, and swifter than antelopes. Their mighty war whoops caused the birds to fall out of the air. Their shields were of stone. Their spears were young saplings tipped with tho black flint of the mountains. On a time they made war on our tribe. Tho warriors war-riors met in council and tried to think of a way to keep them from killing every one. Suddenly 'their ears were filled with a mighty war whoop, and Sinti his back bent low, came into the camp. On his broad shoulders he carried a buffalo ho bad killed. When he straightened up his head reached to the top of the tallest topee. Sinti listened lis-tened to what the warriors of the council had to say about the giants. Then he laughed. "So, that is all that troubles you! The giants! Roast that buffalo," he told the women, "aud we shall have a feast save the hump for me." They feasted, and Sinti ate every bit of the buffalo's hump. Then he stood up iiiiu suiu iu me uuicib. iuw givu me four good elk skins." They gave him the f6ur elk skins, and he went down to the river to make his war medicine. He spread one of tho elk skins out on the sand, turned his face to th,e east and prayed to the Ones of .that Way. When ho looked at tho skin, it was covered with sand. Ho spread one of the skins over that one and prayed to the Ones of tho South. Then ho knew what to do. Ho sewed tho two skins together with the sand between them, with many stitches of buffalo sinew. Ho spread another skin on the ground, prayed to the Ones of tho West, and they covered it with sand. When ho had prayed to the Ones of the North, ho sowed tho two skins together as he did the others sand between. After praying to Grandfath- He Spread one of the elk Skino on the sand and prayed er the Sun, ho sowed the skins together togeth-er so as to form a shirt his war shirt. When Siantl put it on, the shirt covered cover-ed his. long, lanky body from his neck to his knees. II h knew that as the Ones of the Four Ways and the Sun had helped him make it, they would help him fight in it Sinti called tho chiefs together and told them not to be afraid and he wuuld show them how to fight giants. Just then thero was an awful shout in tho camp. "The -giants are coming! The giants!" When tho people looked around for our hero, ho" was gone.
