Show ' DR. VANCE'S DAILY ARTICLE L BY DR. JAMES I. VANCE, Found of Inter-Church World Movement Move-ment and Chairman, Federal Council Coun-cil of Churches of America. America is rich in territory and natural nat-ural resources. She is richer In the enterprise and vigor of her people. She Is rich beyond compare in her opportunities. oppor-tunities. But all theso may bo changed from tho column of assets to that of liabilities if there is a breakdown in tho character of tho people of America. Business depends on confidence. People must trust each other. Destroy De-stroy confidence, and you have given a panic the right of way. Anything that makes a man distrust his fellow man is bad for business. Anything that promotes faith of man in his fellow fel-low helps business. A bank may have limitless capital, but let the public j suspect that the men who manage it aro rascals, and depositors will hunU another bank with which to do business. busi-ness. Character is- society's biggest commercial asset, ajid without it a nation na-tion is on the road to tho bow-wows. Character is largely a product of tho home. Tho church Is important, and the school is important, but tho homo Is more important than either as a character buildor and a citizen producer. produc-er. The lifo in tho nation will not rise higher than the life in the homes of the nation. As goes the home, so goes the nation. Children who have not been taught honesty at home fall easy victims to the lure of dishonesty and expediency when they venture life in tho open. Boys and girls who .have learned at homo to slur at the flag of their country, make poor patriots when they reach the ballot-box and-face and-face tho duties of citizenship. What America needs most is homes of the right kind. A home Is what a woman Inakcs it. AS ARE THE MOTHERS. SO ARE THE HOMES. The ideals of a homo aro ont likely to rise higher than the ideals of the mother in tho home. If she bo a woman of cheap Ideals, her home will be a veneer. Fathers are useful, but their rolo is less potential in shaping the intimate life of the home. Boys arc what their mothers make them. Timothy's mother and grandmother were godly women. Paul takes off his hat to them. i It is the mother who holds the keys to the home. j nn |
