Show TO THE RESCUE Miss Rose Elizabeth Cleveland we are sorry to note is being roasted in a mild manner by the eastern press and particularly partic-ularly by that part of it in her adopted home in Chicago This is contrary to all precedent and is strange from the further fur-ther fact that many of the leading lights of the Chicago daily press are New York I I men and noted for their indulgence toward II ward ladies who earn their bread by the pencil The roasting is given further prominence by an article in the New York Sun in which it is stated that John Boyle OReily of the Boston PilotS being requested by Miss Cleveland to contribute an article to her magazine at the rate of 6 per page indignantly answered in the following fashion U I cannot see he wrote why you should appeal to the charity of literary people for the benefit of your magazine If your letter is not an appeal for charity it is a humiliation and a disgrace to the literary lite-rary profession This from OReily doubtless hurt Miss Clevelands feelings deeply and it is no wonder that it did She doubtless offered all she could afford from the limited means allowed her and trusted to his innatechivalry towards her sex to lend her a helping hand in establishing a high line of literary matter I in her magazine To help the uncomfortable uncom-fortable position in which the lady is placed and make it worse she has taken tak-en to snubbing reporters and that in itself must work her harm But with all this conceded is there not enough of chivalrous sentiment in the eastern press to come to Miss Clevelands aid and down all the other fellows who handle her name solely an that of a writer and overlook the fact that she has courageously undertaken a task at which they would quail only for the good she hoped to do to literature among them Where are Gene Field Mel Stone F D Bogart Guy McGee Wymus Henderson and all that crowd who were wont to come to the aid of deserving womanhood and make the fur fly from I the backs of all who forgot their devoir to a lady Rise up gentlemen and prove by your keen pens that your town is not lost because of Anarchists or anybody any-body else and that Rose Elizabeth Cleveland Cleve-land shall have a fair chance among you at all hazards We heartily agree with the Sun in the following It appears to us that the really handsome thing for Boyle OReilly to do is to reconsider recon-sider his decision We are confident that his native chivalry and generosity will get the better of the momentary sense of aston ishment at being offered six dollars a page to write for a Chicago magazine Then he will sit down and compose an article two thousand words long in his very best style and mail it to Miss Rose Elizabeth Cleve i land with his complimentsnot as a matter of charity but to be paid for at tho regular rate of one cent a word provided of course Miss Cleveland finds it suitable for the columns i col-umns of the magazine which she edits I |
