pleuropneumonia in this city for the past three or four days had a consultation this forenoon with the officials of-ficials of the stock yards company It was learned that the conclusion reached was that the beef that passed proper inspection and I I that was pronounced not to be diseased I might be sold The Live Stock Commission intimates that it fully expects that within a I week Po quarantine against Chicago beef will be declared by Iowa and Wisconsin and I that some such action is contemplated is evident by the presence in the city of the live stock officials of the States named I Pearson said in answer to a question as to what would be done with the cattle We < intend to have every one of them slaughtered and will make a separate inspection of the I longs of the animals Those whose lungs 1 show signs of pleuro will be burned up but I the others will be sold for beef for what is Ibid I-bid for them I i WASHINGTON Sept 24 Commissioner Coleman of the Department of Agriculture i who sent Dr Salmon of the Bureau of Animal Ani-mal Industry to Chicago to ascertain if I the disease broken out there is pleuropnen 1 mania received today the following report There is no doubt that the cattle disease here is pleuropneumonia The authorities i find much difficulty in dealing with it f I Seventyfive thousand dollars worth of cattle l 1 are to be slaughtered and less than 50000 j is available in state appropriations The 1 Department cannot pay for the diseased cattle i cat-tle here because the state law requires their sacrifice without compensation I have offered for the Department to meet the expenses ex-penses of the slaughter excepting the compensation com-pensation of owners disinfecting and also to make an inspection of the suspected district dis-trict Do you approve of what I have done I The State Commission is now arranging the i details of the slaughter Commissioner Coleman sent the following I i reply Telegram received and your action approved You are also authorized to take I any steps deemed necessary and expedient to still further confirm your diagnosis and fully establish that the disease is pleuro I pneumonia CHICAGO Sept 4At a conference between be-tween the members of the Live Stock Com I mission and the officials of the Stock Yards I Company this morning Mr Pearson said i the Stock Yard representatives and Commissioners i I Commis-sioners had decided to kill all the cattle now in the Ph nix and Shufeldt distilleries l about 2000 head that on a postmortem examination I ex-amination all the diseased cattle would be I cremated and all the healthy cattle sold to I the highest bidder President Sherman of the Stock Yards Company said a million I dollars would be lost to the packing interests I of Chicago if the report went out to the i world that beef from infected distilleries whether healthy or not was being shipped from Chicago Mr Pearson then informed I the gentlemen that the State only had 49000 with which to compensate the owners I of healthy cattle and if none of the healthy beef was utilized the State will be at an expense I ex-pense at least double that amount He then suggested to the Stock Yard men that they buy up the healthy beef and help the Commissioners I Com-missioners out of their dilemna He said the Commission would of course exhaust the appropriation already in hand No decisive de-cisive answer to the proposition was given The Commissioners this afternoon held a conference with Dr Salmon United States Veterinarian Dr Casewell State Veterina nan and Veterinarians from Wisconsin Iowa and Michigan Dr Salmon said that he had been in telegraph communication I with United States Commissioner Coleman of the Department of Agriculture who had authorized the continuance of the quarantine i quaran-tine at the expense of the National Government Govern-ment until it should be decided what disposition dispo-sition to make of the carcasses Dr Salmon Sal-mon said he was authorized to double the quarantine force now existing which would i coat Government about S7 per day Tht quarantine force would then consist of ventvnine deputies two during the day and four during the night at each four dis tiUeries and five at Harveys farm The Commission decided to detail an extra force e ceptine for the 400 head of cattle owned by the Fairbanks Canning Company of Which Nelson Morris is President A majority I ma-jority of the 3000 animals under quarantine belong to men depending on their two or three cows for a living When the news of the extension of the quarantine reached I I them tonight they were thoroughly aroused I They say that the State will be obliged to I I destroy all beef and as only healthy cattle will be appraised the quarantine extension is a conspiracy to I spread the disease as far I as possible among the quarantined cattle I before the slaughter takes place j f i |
