Show The Louisiana Orange Crop CHICAGO Sept 24The Times New Orleans Or-leans La special says The Louisiana orange crop is usually marketed about this time Reports from Calicarren St Bernard St Mary Cameron La Fourche and other parishes where oranges are principally I I grown state the crop is a complete failure this year It usually averages from thirty to fifty million barrels a year but it will not be one million this year in consequence of the severe freeze last winter The news is uniformly bad from every portion of the State In some places where 500 barrels were obtained last year barely a barrel will be secured The freeze last winter did terrible ter-rible damage killing limbs and requiring the cutting off of so much dead wood as to almost destroy the trees There absolutely no crop None of the trees are bearing properly I Large plantations are as badly injured as the small ones The worst matter is that the trees are so badly injured that it will take years of propitious weather before the crop will be a full one again It will be but a little unproved next year and only a partial par-tial production the year following If nothing happens to prevent the third year Should see a fair crop A large proportion of the Louisiana crop last year was shipped north but there is not enough now for home consumption and New Orleans will have to depend on California and Florida |
