Show CALIFORNIA REPUBLICANS OPPOSED OP-POSED TO SILVER COINAGE I The Nevada Democratic State Convention Conven-tion administered a well merited rebuke to the Republicans of California in the following language which is a portion of one of the resolutions in the Democratic platform The action of the Republican party in California in refusing to insert a silver plank in their platform deserves the condemnation I con-demnation of the silverproducing people of the mining regions of the Pacific Coast The action of the Republicans in California Cali-fornia upon the silver question although in harmony with their party in the East is to be regretted by the friends of silver everywhere California is nearly as much interested in the silver production as Nevada Utah or Colorado and should be as unanimous in favor of free coinage It seems pitifulthat a body of men whose constituents so unanimously favor all I measures calculated to increase the value of silver and encourage the mining industry should be influenced by party dictation in the East and the domineering policy of the gold bug and national bank magnates who control the organization in that section to such an extent as to omit such an important im-portant and essential matter in their plat form That the omission was not an oversight is proven by the fact that the Committee on Platform reported a free coinageresolution which was ruthlessly stricken out by tho Convention In addition ad-dition to this the delegates from the Third Congressional District unanimqusly nominated McKenna who voted against the free coinage bill at the last session There is a striking difference between the action of the Republican Convention Conven-tion of California and the Democratic Demo-cratic Convention of Nevada upon this question The former mostabjectly succumbed suc-cumbed to the pressure from the East following blindly the dictation of their j Wall Street masters while the latter had the courage to take issue with the President Presi-dent elected by their party entering a I most emphatic protest against his financial finan-cial policy in the following expressive and forcible language We demand that good faith shall be observed ob-served with the people by the Democratic I administration by religiously adhering to the money plank as it does every other plank of the Chicago platform President Cleveland in his wise conservative conserva-tive and patriotic administration of our public pub-lic affairs both foreign and domestic challenges chal-lenges our Inchest admiration except in the following of the beaten path of his Republican Republi-can predecessors and the policy of the Republican Repub-lican party on the silver question in disregard disre-gard of the cherished principles of the National Na-tional Democratic party Wo demand of the Administration at Washington that it shall second the efforts of the Democratic Representatives in > Congress Con-gress to give the people free coinage of silver sil-ver notwithstanding the formidable combinations com-binations existing between the gold rings National Banks and the National Republican Republi-can party to maintain tho single gold r standard The last paragraph contains the entire matter in a nutshell The President has but to second the efforts of the members mem-bers of his party in Congress to place himself in line with the policy indicated by the platform upon which he was elected This he has not done and the Democracy of Nevada did not for a moment mo-ment hesitate to administer to the Administration Ad-ministration a scathing rebuke for its departure de-parture from its obligations as expressed in the National platform while the Republicans of California virtually endorsed Mr Cleveland in the only matter which renders him objectionable objection-able to the people of the Pacific Coast It is pretty certain that if the Republican nominees for Congress are elected in California the monometalists of the East can count upon six votes from the S S Pacific coast every one of which should be given for free coinage It is impost impos-t > S sible for us to conceive how any intelligent S intelli-gent person can fail to discern that the only hope for free coinage rests in the 4 chances for a Democratic House and Senate S |
